One might think Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio would be crowing Friday over Arizona enacting a state law ordering police to screen for illegal immigrants in the field.
After all Arpaio has been doing it for years - with or without official permission. But the self-proclaimed "America's toughest sheriff" was nonchalant about the whole thing during a live radio broadcast of the "John and Ken Show" at a hotel in Orange.
"It's a political deal," Arpaio shrugged, despite the dozens of adoring fans that clogged the conference room and flowed out into the courtyard.
Still, Arpaio said, it is a good time for him to consider running for governor in the Republican primary in August. He will come to a decision in a week, he said, as the crowd cheered and howled pro-Joe slogans.
Arpaio is in town to support Orange County sheriff's candidate and former lieutenant Bill Hunt, who worked the crowd enthusiastically. Hunt chided Sheriff Sandra Hutchens for not screening for illegal immigrants in the field; for releasing some non-violent misdemenants early and for her plan to rent 2,000 jail beds to the federal government.

Sheriff Joe isn't the crowing type.
SHERIFF JOE VINDICATED
SHERIFF JOE WAS RIGHT!
2 headlines we’ll NEVER SEE.. but sure would LIKE to.
Yep, I will work on getting Bill Hunt elected Sheriff here in Orange County.
Ping!
Joe Arpiao has been adhering to Federal law for years - now, it is loud and clear. HE WAS RIGHT, and now, he has STATE back-up. (And I hope he DOES run for Gov. He’ll win in a heart-beat!)
Or else, a business that wouldn’t be viable if it had to employ citizens or legal residents under onerous government regulations. Atlas can shrug in more than one way, though I would never myself condone the hiring of the so called “undocumented immigrants.”
Joe is the County Sheriff, the highest ranking law enforcement officer in the county.
Joe doesn't need to ask permission.
Stupid "journalist".
With so many unemployed, I am sure there would be many who would rather work in jobs beneath their skills and pay grade (yeah, I know), than bemoan their fate in leisure as the tax payers wring their hands.
It’s the onerous government regulations (taxation etc) that make the difference
Legal immigrants are also deprived of jobs by the invading hordes
A few of the protesters over this bill is now in Sheriff Joe’s jail.
[snip]PHOENIX (AP) - Nine Arizona State University students were arrested Tuesday at the state Capitol in Phoenix during a protest against a sweeping immigration bill intended to ramp up law enforcement efforts in Arizona.
As members of the immigrant advocacy and faith community spoke out strongly against the legislation, the students chained themselves to a door closest to the legislative wing of the Capitol.
They were soon after arrested and taken to the Maricopa County jail. (Welcome to Sheriff Joes place! lol)
Attorney Antonio Bustamante, who represents 1 of the students arrested, says the students chose to chain themselves to the Capitol doors to block the bigotry that was emanating from the Legislature and send a message to Gov. Jan Brewer.
