Jon Stewart’s Punching Bag, Fox News

Jon Stewart’s Punching Bag, Fox News

By BRIAN STELTER April 23, 2010 George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are long gone. Fox News Channel is Jon Stewart’s new enemy No. 1.

Last week that comedian did something that the hosts of “Fox & Friends,” the morning show on Fox News, did not do: he had his staff members call the White House and ask a question.

It may have been in pursuit of farce, not fact, but it gave credence to the people who say “The Daily Show” is journalistic, not just satiric. “Fox & Friends” had repeatedly asked whether the crescent-shaped logo of the nuclear security summit was an “Islamic image,” one selected by President Obama in his outreach to the Muslim world. The White House told “The Daily Show” that the logo was actually based on the Rutherford-Bohr model of the atom.

“This is how relentless Fox is” in savaging President Obama, Mr. Stewart said.

On the subject of Fox, Mr. Stewart is pretty relentless too. As demonstrated by that crescent segment and dozens of others since Mr. Obama took office, he may well be television’s pre-eminent fact-checker of Fox News, the nation’s highest-rated cable news channel.

It has been noticed by, among other people, the Fox host Bill O’Reilly, who called Mr. Stewart a “devoted critic” of Fox News and said “his influence is growing.”

Unable to debate ideas, the small-minded Mr. Stewart must necessarily attack people, in much the same way that tiny dogs can do no more than nip at ones ankles.

Is Fox completely infallible? No. They make mistakes from time to time. Opinion programs can be a bit sloppy. The only personality in any media that is virtually flawless is Rush Limbaugh. Likewise, John Stewart gets it wrong just as much and even more than Fox. I’ve noticed Stewart from time to time has excluded parts of statements to distort what was being said for his audience. Stewart also acts like a teenager and likes to drop the F-bomb every now and again. He’s been guilty of not taking his Liberal guests to task when they make the same mistakes as Fox News or worse. Stewart doesn’t give his own opinion on the fly and he not only reads a teleprompter most of the time, most of his material is written by others. It’s hard to ignore his gift for delivery, I admit.

Basically, Stewart doesn’t have a spine and he’s inconsistent and his show is more fake than FoxNews would ever consider being.

Of course he’s more fake than Fox News, that’s what he show is all about. It’s fake, it doesn’t claim to be news, it doesn’t demand to be taken seriously. Fox, on the other hand, ought to just take the News out of its name. Beck, Hannity, O’Reilly? I might agree with much, maybe even most, of what they say, but I can’t stand to watch any of them for more than a few minutes at a time.

I hate to admit how much I’d pay for Mr. Liebowitz to be so thoroughly embarrassed on live TV that somehow his arrogant, sarcastic smile gets wiped off his face.

Stewart, Maher etc have a vile and vicious way of advancing their own political agendas masquerading as political comedy. This is the most dangerous form of electioneering because humor has a way of using a kernel of fact to bake a giant fraud.

savaging = not cheerleading, actually asking questions regarding Obama's policies

It is arrogance and the need for attention. Stewart is another liberal ideologue that craves attention. He actually believes that he is the smartest man that has ever lived, and it must drive him crazy for FOX to be so much more popular than his rinky-dinky show.

Small vocabulary tip to the New York Times: A "punching bag" is a defenseless target one damages repeatedly. That does not accurately reflect the Stewart-Fox dynamic. The correct term for an impervious, indifferent target one attacks repeatedly to no effect is "windmill," a reference to Don Quixote. Hope this helps.

I spent years studying physics and never once doodled an electron model to look like a crescent moon. You can design lots of logos to represent an atom and this one looks like a crescent. What are the odds?

And how many fools get their news from the Dan Rather school of journalism AKA The Jon Stewart Show?

The fake but accurate “news”...

Stewart is doing this to try to tap into the huge FOX audience. What he wants is to get them watching him to see what he is going to say next against FOX. These narcissists want attention and they do not care if it is negative attention. How anyone could listen to this man and consider what he says as serious is beyond me. The average age of his audience must be about 12. I wish O’Reilly would stop advertising for him.

YES! And, O’Reilly has made him visible by bringing all of this trash up. Jon Stewart is not funny and a good bet would be that his appeal exists on the fringes of society.

From Wikipedia: “...Stewart is estranged from his father.”

Even his own father can’t stand this pompous humorless clown.
