Host hurls Tebow ‘Nazi’ remark
Boston Herald ^ | April 24, 2010 | Jessica Heslam

A Boston sports-radio host yesterday likened former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow’s NFL draft party to a “Nazi rally,” a remark one media observer called an “amazing double standard.”

Fred “Toucher” Toettcher said yesterday on 98.5 The Sports Hub, “It looked like some kind of Nazi rally. . . . So lily-white is what I’m trying to say. Yeah, Stepford Wives.”

Station spokesman Cha-Chi Loprete said the station “received no inquiries regarding” the morning drive-time show and declined further comment. Efforts to reach Toettcher for comment were unsuccessful.

So Monday morning we all call 98.5 and complain and demand his firing.

"why are sports media so left wing?"

Sports media guys go to the same Journalism schools as the Journalists from the LSM do.

Toettcher is obviously pissed off at God about something.

I loved that scene at the Tebow home. His mother was holding a baby as the Bronco’s selection was announced. I hope Tebow excels in the NFL, along with Jimmy Clausen. At least they behave like proper human beings.

There was a (first round) NFL signing party in my small hometown Thurs night and there were no white people in the pictures. It was for relatives and close friends...but everybody in town is proud of him because he is a good kid.

So being "lily white"="Nazi"?

Like the MSNBC on-air team, I suppose.

I had friends who went to Central HS in Litle Rock when it was being integrated ...with the National Guard in the halls.

Twelve years later they lived in a Boston suburb and were appalled at the racism in Boston.

there’s a certain subset of the sports fans that are culturally uncomfortable with the Evangelical Christian subculture of football in the South

I could not believe nor tolerate the hate for Tebow on a couple of pro football boards I visited over the past few days during the NFL draft. They are very small-minded, condescending people who think they're cool and trendy.

No one ever accused sports-talk hosts of being particularly intelligent.

My reply included “What would have happened if he said something equally offensive about the all-black households shown”?

Take a look at the on air talent at the website. One guy appears to be hispanic (DA), but there are no blacks. This station doesn’t appear to be a bastion of diversity.

On the subject of the draft NFL.com had the fans rank the top 75 drafted players of all time. Montana was first. Terry Bradshaw wasn't in the top ten. Whats up with that?

I came across an ESPN show a few months ago and the debate was where Tebow ranks among the great college football players of all-time. A black woman got heated when a white host opined that he thought Tebow was the best he’d seen. She chastised him repeatedly (called him names) while he tried to be reasonable. She brought up plenty of black players (O.J. Simpson, for example) but at no point did she mention a white player, someone like Roger Staubach (a better argument since he was a QB) who was ranked 9th best according to a recent ESPN ranking. She was probably young and inexperienced to the history of the game but to have her in that position is poor production by ESPN.

What a stupid remark. A white guy surrounded by his white family is too white? Life isn’t a Steve Martin movie.

I’m excited Tebow and Thomas are coming to Denver, along with Beadles, Walton and Decker. They are all hard-working, team-first guys. After several years of guys who spent more time complaining than playing, it is refreshing to see guys who want to play. It will be exciting to see effort on the field again.

Sadly, Tebow is being criticized here for his “too good to be true” character (he has to be a fake, because no one is this good). Since when did being a good guy become a character flaw? After all the drunk drivers, assaults, gang murders, etc., there are a few of us who are excited to see drama on the field and not in the police blotter. McDaniels is putting together a team of character and I, for one, am proud of him.

I don’t know much about these “personalities” but through a search I found an article from 2006 which states that he is from Michigan and the crew got their start in Atlanta.

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2006/06/08/at_bcn_bad_boy_act_carries_into_afternoon/

In person, the ``Toucher and Rich” crew (which includes hyperactive trivia-whiz Adolfo Gonzalez Jr.) are somewhat calmer than on air, but their camaraderie carries off mike. Toucher, Shertenlieb, and Clark became friends around 2000, while working different shifts at 99X, a rock station in Atlanta. Gonzalez joined the gang as Shertenlieb’s intern during a later stint in Dallas. A buyout at the Atlanta station and the end of Shertenlieb’s Dallas contract gave them an opportunity to reinvent themselves, and an audition last month led to the show.

Both Toucher, who grew up in Michigan, and Shertenlieb, a New York native, expect to fit in better in Boston than they did in the South. ``The way that we do radio is really more appropriate for the Northeast,” says Toucher. They spent much of their first show goofing on their former audiences. ``People are more intelligent, more educated here,” he says. Not, they stress, that the ``Toucher and Rich Show” will be tackling any highbrow topics. ``We’re just talking like we normally talk,” says Shertenlieb.
