Washington (CNN) -- The push for immigration reform may be on the front burner for congressional Democrats, but sources say that ultimately, they believe the issue is unlikely to have enough votes to pass.
Democrats say the goal is to try to take it up in the Senate before discussing the Supreme Court nomination this summer and spend the rest of the session before the midterm election on the politically potent issue of jobs.
One big reason for the immigration reform push, sources say, is that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is in a brutal battle to win re-election in Nevada, where a quarter of the population is Hispanic and he has promised to try.
More broadly, Democrats admit, they know that Latinos who voted in big numbers for President Obama are angry that Democratic leaders have not kept a promise to deal with immigration reform.
Sources familiar with discussions about the issue say the White House is reluctant to move on the politically polarizing and divisive issue of immigration without bipartisan support.
Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina seems to be the only GOP senator on board, but he has told Democrats they will lose his support unless they find another Republican.

This sounds like the same hedging that we heard before the big push for Obamacare...
I think we should start a petition to force this guy to switch parties. I'd rather lose the 41st vote than have this idiot constantly acting like the regime has "Republican support."
Look at Specter Senator Graham, therein lies your future.
I can’t see Blanche Lincoln coming on board on this even with her chicken plants needing slave labor. Not an election year.
That is a LIE they have the votes ,Filthy Rats.
I was thinking that too.
They have the votes.
yada yada yada............
Based on Lindsey’s adherence to conservative principles, he won’t officially switch to the other side until he sees real competition in the next primary. Otherwise he is a RINO for life. (Not the same as RINO for Life).
Graham???? Immigration....Cap and Trade....What party does he belong to?
We must not be fooled by anything the liars print.
If they thought the Health Reform bill has nasty, they aint seen nothing yet.
Don’t be lulled into inaction — let your elected representatives at the federal and state level hear your opposition to immigration laws allowing amnesty, open borders, anchor babies and free health care or secondary education for illegals.
Blache will vote for it. She has nothing to lose now.
From the article....
If they don’t succeed, Democratic sources say, they will at least be able to show key political constituencies like Latinos that they tried.
Would-of, Could-of, Should-of.
With unemployment around 10%, health care boondoggles and such, this will be hard. I bet ya the demmies won’t ask for a CBO score one this. Dumping millions of, low skilled, new citizens on the healthcare system (and welfare rolls) is not workable!!! That needs to be pounded night and day by people.
Dont be lulled into inaction let your elected representatives at the federal and state level hear your opposition to immigration laws allowing amnesty, open borders, anchor babies and free health care or secondary education for illegals.
Absolutely! They will definately get an ear full from me. If this bill even makes it to the floor I predict the congressional phones will melt down just like they did in 2007!
If if it’s one thing we learned with Obama care, lack of votes won’t stop them. They’ll just game the system.
How many of these 25% can/will vote?
I sure hope it stays that way, but I’m sure a few greased palms will alter the picture at least a little...
ANY, repeat ANY, elected official for whom I might have the opportunity to vote who even makes a concilatory remark about amnesty, path to citizenship, immigration reform, etc. has lost my vote FOREVER...it is the paramount issue for me outside of seeing the pRESIDENT defeated, failed and humiliated forever.
