Audit: 43 Arizona businesses have illegal staff
Arizona Daily Star ^

Posted on 04/24/2010 11:09:58 AM PDT by SandRat

More than half of the Arizona businesses that had their workforces audited by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents since last July have been found to have illegal workers on their payrolls.

Immigration department spokeswoman Virginia Kice says that 43 of the 84 companies screened in two rounds of audits have been sent letters listing employees whose employment eligibility is suspect. The agency's policy is not to name the companies with illegal employees unless they are disciplined with a fine or other measure.

Besides violation notices, two of the 43 companies with illegal workers were informed of pending fines. ICE agents did 40 of the audits last July and the other 44 in November.

A movement is afoot by the dems to make businesses responsible for hiring Americans. It will be in some type of immigration reform law, most likely. The government will put pressure on businesses to hire only Americans, thereby making businesses, especially small businesses, another arm of Big Brother.

Corruption will abound. Government will assess heavy fines if a business is caught hiring illegals, but the government will look the other way, or not police the businesses very much at all. The government will have done "something", but when it doesn't work, they will have their "scapegoat" all ready to blame. This solution will be sold instead of simply shutting down the border.

Wonder how many are in Phoenix? The mayor of Phoenix was mouthing off on AMC this AM about asking his city attorney to sue over this bill the Gonernor signed.

Maybe the locals there need to tell this guy he might be more a part of the problem than he is a part of the solution. I would think he isn’t going to be re-elected in Arizona.

People there are really angry over the rancher being killed, while checking stock water tanks on his own land.

In Nevada, there is a company that does all of that for you. I think they are called LYNX-—or maybe LINX. I think the cost is about $125 or so per employee applicant. Since the fine can be daily $5000 perperson, this doesn’t seem too bad to me. I don’t know if they give any kind of discount for more than one possible applicant.

I’ve been told by an HR person that the quickest and easiest way to spot 90% of illegals is the federal eVerify program. According to her, it’s an online program that simply confirms that a valid social security number is held by the person named on the job app.”

EVerify is good, but I don’t know how easy it is to contact them. I don’t know how large their servers are.

Is there anyone here on FR who has actually used eVerify??

It’s called E-Verify. The feds will check their SS numbers and names to make sure they aren’t illegals. If you have check them and the feds OK’d it, then you are safe if it turns out one of them is illegal.

"I've been told by an HR person that the quickest and easiest way to spot 90% of illegals..."

Don't most illegals NOT speak English? If that's so, that's HOW I could tell. Not rocket science.

What happens when the social security number matches in eVerify?

Then they're presumed to be legal, at least according to eVerify. You're just full of problems with dealing with illegal immigration, aren't you?

OK, then, with this and it seems that E Verify is low enough in cost, conscientious small businessmen can comply. Better than nothing.

Sorry, I'm a general manager. That's my training. If you don't identify the problem, it is only by dumb luck you arrive at a solution.

This rarely works either...

You forgot to consider the people working at the social security office that sell valid social security numbers. eVerify is not going to pick those up. Now that may be such a small percentage that it is not of significant concern.

The Mayor is an Open Border believer and would have Phoenix be a ‘Sanctuary City’ if he could and would but for Sheriff Arapio.

Still, it's the Federal government that allowed the situation to grow into the disaster that it is,.

Let's be a little more specific on who is responsible for the millions upon millions of illegals that simply walked across our borders.

Their ability to speak English or lack of it isn't necessarily a very good indicator. Some illegals have better English skills than a good number of legal immigrants.
