LA Times: Cities feeling the pinch
LA Times ^ | April 24, 2010 | By Richard Simon

Even though the economy is showing signs of recovery, these remain tough times for cities and counties, and it's likely to get tougher. So local governments want what Wall Street and carmakers got: federal money.

Concerned that a wave of municipal layoffs could set back the nation's economic recovery, congressional Democrats are pushing a $100-billion bill that would provide $75 billion in federal aid to help cities and counties preserve jobs.

The bill, which has gained 151 cosponsors in the House, also provides an additional $23 billion to help preserve teachers' jobs. Most of the remainder would go to aid police and fire departments.

"Without help, an ongoing local government fiscal crisis could well undercut the nation's recovery," Riverside Mayor Ronald O. Loveridge, president of the National League of Cities, told a congressional committee recently.

The legislation, introduced last month by Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez), a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco), is gaining support among House Democrats who are eager to reduce stubbornly high unemployment in what is shaping up as a tough midterm election for the party in power.

However, it faces uncertain prospects in the Senate, where Republicans have sought to block increased spending without cuts, prompting city officials from red states to step up their lobbying.

The public sector has not cut spending to account for recession-level revenues. This bubble has to burst, and it's going to be ugly for government worker parasites. China won't pay their salaries forever.

$23 billion to help preserve teachers' jobs

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at statements like this. Cut spending. Cut their $100K+ salaries. Make them contribute a couple bucks toward their benefits. And, Earth to LAT: this is a bad recession!! People lose their jobs. That's the way it works. In the bizzaro world of government employment, recession = more taxes to "preserve jobs" on the backs of the slaves/taxpayers.

Once again, a total lack of perspective from the MSM.

...local governments want what Wall Street and carmakers got: federal money.

Why should my hard earned tax dollars bail out cities that failed to constrain their spending?

Why should failed cities be rewarded for their poor judgement and bad fiscal management?

When will the public recognize that every one of these failing cities is a Democrat haven?

There are 3 ways the govt can help out the cities and states to pay off their Union labor because that’s all this is about.
Print money and get inflation. Borrow and go the path of Greece. Tax productive citizens more and watch the economy tumble further.
On the other hand the cities and states could be told to start cutting and don’t stop until its in line.

Phooey. The concern is that the more municipal employees who get laid off, the less union dues there will be to allocate toward getting DEMS elected.

Nearly ALL the money will go to support INSANE public union salaries, benefits and pensions...

The house of cards (unrestrained spending) is going to fall. Bailing out cities and states with “Federal” money will only pospone the fall as well as make the recover worse (more debt for all of us to pay back).

A failing system needs to reform itself or be allowed to fail.

“Concerned that a wave of municipal layoffs could set back the nation’s economic recovery, “

Lets see, private sector, taxpayer supported government jobs support an economic recovery? These jobs are net costs to the taxpayer.

With Democrats it’s all about paying for campaigns ~ which is why they are the captive of the special interests.

“Nuke D.C.”

Izzat you, Ahmanutjob?

Seriesly, DC might just be nuked if the “Manchurian Candidate from Mecca” is not stopped. November had better remove his House & Senate majority or we may have to face the eventual loss of all the historical documents, museums, architectural works, etc that make DC such a nice palce to visit.

Too bad about the savages infesting too much of the residential areas, though.

Oh, yeah - even more of a “too bad” regarding the number of socialists in Congress, the courts, and bureaucracies in DC.

I have little doubt that Ubanga and the rats will find a way to dump (even more) hard-earned tax dollars into the corrupt, concentrated Democrat parasite nests (”cities”). This administration is all about reparations.
