A complaint by a former manager depicts the Grand Junction census office as a den of backbiting and turf battles, as well as anti-Semitism, drug use and several varieties of unprofessional conduct.
The office ...also was hindered by frayed communications with meddlesome upper management in Denver, former manager Bill Hugenberg said in his complaint filed with the Census Bureaus Office of Civil Rights.
The Grand Junction building is the same as the one in which a malodorous marijuana-growing operation left several census employees overcome and the temporary manager, Russell Copelan, complaining that employees were being subjected to questionable working conditions.
Hugenberg was the first of four managers to be in charge of the office for the 2010 census

In other words, it was pretty much a paradigm for American government nation-wide, including the national government in Washington.

The US Census: “They [don’t] see white people!”
I just got directions to my training office that begins Tuesday for Census Numerator.
You drive down three dirt roads to get to a dirt parking lot, walk 1/2 mile to the building on a dirt path. Yes, these are the directions given to me by a seemingly embarassed supervisor. I said “Are you planning to train us or sacrifice us to Beezlebub?”
Oh, and dress is business casual. “But sneakers are acceptable.” I would hope so if I have to hike through the damn woods to get to the training center!
This whole process is a joke and if I wasn’t so desperate for a paycheck I would tell them to shove it.
By the way, I do live in a very rural area, but I promise we have paved roads with actual buildings and parking lots and everything. This wasn’t supposed to be the place they trained, but someone changed it.
You couldn't be more right!
I said Are you planning to train us or sacrifice us to Beezlebub?
Hmmmmmmm
Train?
or Beelzebub?
Tough one.
I laughed out loud. Thanks
You’re welcome. My supervisor laughed at it too and it kind of broke the ice on his sheepishness in trying to explain how to get out to this place. Maybe we’ll start on a good foot.
I hope so.
Sounds like reports of government operations coming out of Zimbabwe.
Very interesting. I Bailiff at our County Court at Law and our District Clerk was trying to accomodate the instructor for census training with a room. The room is nice, large table, chairs, huge dry erase board. They never told her how many, said it was too small.
Our Clerk told them that the facilities are not available just to walk in, they are usually reserved for quite a few things going on. The instructor was petulant and seemed irritated with dealing with such “underlings” (Distric Clerk no less, quite a responsibility).
Normally so soft spoken and accomodating she told him, “Feel free to teach your class in the parking lot if you wish, but this is all that is available”, then walked back to her busy office. They used the room with chairs and room left over. We cheered our Dist. Clerk!
