Some New Yorkers see their city as the center of the universe. But over the weekend, all eyes were focused on Arizona after the states governor signed the countrys most stringent immigration bill into law.
On Saturday, New York area politicians and immigrants groups denounced the measure, which allows police to question people on the suspicion that they may be here illegally. As the Daily News reported, Mayor Bloomberg said the new measure could hurt foreign investment. Sen. Chuck Schumer called it mean-spirited and Bill DeBlasio, the public advocate, said it was Un-American.
On Sunday, the Rev. Al Sharpton said he would join a coalition of activists and travel to Arizona to protest the measure.
The Arizona immigration bill is an affront to the civil rights of all Americans and an attempt to legalize racial profiling, he said in a statement.
Joining Sharpton was a host of New York Latino leaders, including representatives from the Puerto Rican Bar Association, which is offering legal assistance to fight the measure in court.
Defenders of the Arizona bill said it will push the federal government to implement better border protection measures, and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has said racial profiling will not be part of the policy.
On May 1, immigrant rights activists will hold a series of rallies across the country to protest the Arizona law. In New York, the rally will take place in Foley Square in downtown Manhattan.

Al Sharpton and Michael Bloomberg....Doing the jobs real Americans just won’t do.
What business is it of Mayor Bloomberg? It’s no skin off his nose, he should volunteer to provide a one way bus ticket for every illegal that resides in Arizona to NYC. That is, if he’s really offended. We’d be good with that.
I do think Sharpton is barking up the wrong tree. People in Arizona are not like New Yorkers - -
Of course, should Sharpton or any of his cronies be “roughed up” by AZ law abiding citizens, he will immediately run to Hussein Obama’s Justice Department and file charges; charges which Holder will be more than happy to file against “whitey”.
Hell .. that's probably where they were headed anyway.
The Feds are just too lazy....and the Dems certainly don't want to start sending illegal voters back to Mexico.
They just don’t want all the illegals flooding to NY... why not, NY city is filled to overflowing with empty buildings they can pack with illegals and NY state can raise taxes even more to house and feed them... isn’t that what liberal compassion is all about, taking things from people and redistributing it as it benefits them.
Roger that. All the right people are getting wee wee'd.
New York Dudes! You live in New York. What we Westerners do is NOYFB.
Al Sharpton lives for these moments so he can try to justify his miserable existence.
I need their Social Security numbers........
“illegal voters” — I think you meant to say. “illegal Democrat voters” - - am I right? Reason I say this is because many of the may already be registered to vote.
2. We already have 100-200 thousand illegals in the city alone.
Sharpton and Bloomberg are afraid. They fear that once America wakes up and enforces our laws there influence will be significantly diminished.
What professional racebaiters like Al Sharpton say or think is meaningless to me.
Chucky, if the laws are "mean spirited", by all means, repeal them and see how long it is before you have to flee to Mexico.
And the humor coming from foreign criminal advocates calling us "Unamerican" is just too funny for words...
Unless all these people, disconnected to reality, think that their supporters who think our laws are just suggestions, and that unlimited drain on our taxes is harmless, and that the "takers" now outnumber the "payers," so that they are safe, there is a sudden and rude awakening on the horizon.
Then so is the Federal Law on which this one is modeled.
