Some New Yorkers see their city as the center of the universe. But over the weekend, all eyes were focused on Arizona after the states governor signed the countrys most stringent immigration bill into law.
On Saturday, New York area politicians and immigrants groups denounced the measure, which allows police to question people on the suspicion that they may be here illegally. As the Daily News reported, Mayor Bloomberg said the new measure could hurt foreign investment. Sen. Chuck Schumer called it mean-spirited and Bill DeBlasio, the public advocate, said it was Un-American.
On Sunday, the Rev. Al Sharpton said he would join a coalition of activists and travel to Arizona to protest the measure.
The Arizona immigration bill is an affront to the civil rights of all Americans and an attempt to legalize racial profiling, he said in a statement.
Joining Sharpton was a host of New York Latino leaders, including representatives from the Puerto Rican Bar Association, which is offering legal assistance to fight the measure in court.
Defenders of the Arizona bill said it will push the federal government to implement better border protection measures, and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has said racial profiling will not be part of the policy.
On May 1, immigrant rights activists will hold a series of rallies across the country to protest the Arizona law. In New York, the rally will take place in Foley Square in downtown Manhattan.

Sounds like you got room for 300, maybe 400k then? Might take two- three weeks to get that many up there, but we’re working on it.
Sharpton angry-—again, still?
Must be pitiful to choose to live a life full of hatred and anger.
Oh, goody! The Rev. Al Sharpton is coming back to town!
Good reverend, please bring Bertha Lewis with you.
Then go on with Lou Dobbs again, so he can take you to task for dissing our Sheriff Joe!

“When Arizona catches them, take them directly to the Greyhound station and put them on the bus for New York.”
A great idea! Post of the day!
And explain what it is, exactly, Al Sharpton does.
He has been described as a “community activist” — similar to a “community organizer”. I have heard that for as much trouble as Sharpton stirs up in MYC, he does not even reside in the city. Allegedly, he lives in New Jersey. Don’t know what church, if any, with which me may be associated.
What pay?
Has this clown ever had a real job in his entire life?
I mean, a real job where he produced something useful that someone else could use? Where he wasn't "paid" (directly or indirectly) with our tax money --- to insult and abuse working Americans?
Point taken. I guess I was thinking metaphorically - like them opening doors for him to other lucrative scames, etc.
