Arizona Governor Jan Brewer last week signed a new law into effect that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 60% of voters nationwide favor such a law, while 31% are opposed.

Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Republicans support the law along with 62% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Democratic voters are evenly divided on the measure.

At the same time, however, 58% of all voters are at least somewhat concerned that “efforts to identify and deport illegal immigrants will also end up violating the civil rights of some U.S. citizens.” That figure includes 29% who are Very Concerned about possible civil rights violations.....

I'm okay with that. The more the socialists focus on something other than jobs, the better for real Americans in November.

How would this law work? I am a citizen and have a driver’s license. If a cop stops me for running a stop sign, does that mean he demand proof of citizenship for me and everyone in my car? Is that really what people want?

I heard some politician bashing this law saying that police would use flimsy excuses such as “lack of English” to check immigration status, as if that were racial profiling. Anyone who is LEGALLY in this country should be able to speak basic English to a policeman if stopped. Why wouldn’t this be a big red flag? And you know what? If you’re stopped, and you’re legal, the nice policeman will apologize and let you go on your way.

Obama is going to screw himself yet again if he gets AZ law shot down.

The case is going to take years to wind it's way through the courts, if 0bozo and his Marxist Attorney General Holder decide to challenge it in court.
Meanwhile, the negative publicity while the case is being tried and the anger that will generate amongst the 60% of Americans who support the Arizona law, will give 0bozo and the Democrat's falling poll numbers. 2012 elections are going to be about repealing 0bamcare and maintaining immigration enforcement. That's a lose, lose for 0bozo and the Democrats.
Fine by me.

I’m not sure if I agree with this. Stopping people in their cars to check for citizenship opens up a whole can of worms for abusing 4th amendment rights. Just imagine that a cop stops someone who turns out to be a lawful citizen, then oops, I see a gun in that car. Do you have a conceal carry license?

The answer is to enforce the existing immigration laws on the books. To go after the employers with fines and stiff penalties when illegal workers are found at their workplaces. And to deport the illegals from there. No available work for illegal immigrants, no illegal immigrants.

You don't need a concealed carry license to carry a gun unconcealed. But I tend to agree with your point, if that's what this law does.

"You don't need a concealed carry license to carry a gun unconcealed."

In Pa, in order to carry a loaded gun in your car, you need a license to carry permit which is our concealed carry permit. There is no license to open carry a firearms in Pa. There's no law on the books against it here. I guess I erred in assuming other states were like mine and came up with a poor example. I wanted to get people to see the problems that could arise. That's why I chose the gun issue.

I have the same concerns, as do many in this poll.

But I've asked several Mexican American friends the same question -- Would it bother you if were stopped based on looking Hispanic? The answer was no -- minor hassle, no different than dealing with airport security. One asked me if we'd ever been stopped in Mexico and identified as American -- the answer was yes! Last time we were in Baja, the government police (with automatic weapons and wearing ski masks) stopped us on the highway and asked for our passports.

My husband is often mistaken for being light Hispanic, he'd probably be subject to questioning in Arizona, too!

I agree. It's amazing how this current federal government continuously oversteps it's constitutional bounds. Then when there is something that is clearly mandated by the constitution as something the Federal government should be doing, they refuse to do it. This Arizona law is all about the abrogation of the Federal government's responsibilities.

And I never want to see that happen in our beloved country. We are not a bananna republic. As long as it was kept to are you a citizen/are you not a citizen it would be fine. However, it just bothers me to think that this would open up opportunities to pursue other criminal activity by this stop (i.e. violating 4th amendment).

Excellent point.

I believe that, while Arizona has a perfect right to defend itself from being overwhelmed and invaded by illegal aliens, this is less than a perfect law. And because of those imperfections, it has a very good chance of being shot down by the courts -- which will, in effect, "throw the baby out with the bathwater".

Not shot down:

SAN FRANCISCO – Gay rights activists say they have failed to qualify a measure that would repeal California’s same-sex marriage ban for the November ballot.

Restore Equality 2010 chairman Sean Bohac says the volunteer-run group fell short of gathering the nearly 695,000 signatures needed to put the initiative before voters. Monday was the deadline for submitting the signatures to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Bohac says Restore Equality’s failed effort was undermined by the decision of more established gay rights groups not to participate in the campaign.

He says same-sex marriage supporters now are turning their attention to trying to repeal Proposition 8 in 2012.

A lawsuit to overturn Prop. 8 also is pending before a federal trial judge.

No, it doesn't.

They stop people for DL checks and proof of insurance checks in my state. Have for some time. Got stopped in one. The car next to me was driven by an illegal. They didn't wave him through. ;) At the very least, he lost his car.

“No stopping a legally driven car to verify citizenship.”

If you have no DL and insurance (if your state requires it), you aren’t legally driving. The key is to stop ALL cars in roadblocks and check every one. This isn’t new in other states.

The law requires that in order to even question you about your immigration status, there must be reasonable suspicion that you are not in the country legally.

IOW if you present a valid Arizona Driver's license, then the questioning would have to stop there, because your legal status has already been determined by the DMV.

But if you were driving without a valid license, did not have a valid registration on your car, had no proof of insurance, and you could not speak a word of English, then I think the officer might have a reasonable basis for suspecting that you are not legally in the State of Arizona.

You got a problem with that?

I doubt Arizona issues driver’s licenses to illegals. Not even California does that (Not YET anyway. The CA “illegal alien sympathizer” legislators have made NUMEROUS attempts to get licenses issued to aliens).

My point is.. If you have a DL, no worries. If you’re driving without a license, an officer has EVERY right to handcuff you at a minimum, with illegals getting the added deportation orders. That’s how it SHOULD BE anyway. In CA, an officer will arrest an illegal w/out a DL, but is prohibited from questioning citizenship. THAT’S not right.

3 cheers to Arizona. “Illegal” is illegal. What’s the fuss?

Thanks for the insight. I’ve been waiting for a bit more clarification on the rules. If it was “there’s a dark-skinned guy I’m stopping him” - forget it. (Too easily could become “there’s an older white guy with a fanny pack, I’m stopping him to see if he has a gun”.

I hope that the cops get updated on all of the things to look for in forged documents. I hear that is a big deal, and too easy for the illegals to obtain and show to their employers for work.
