One hundred and eighteen years after her great-grandmother arrived in America, Brewer stood in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, next in line for governor.
And it must have meant nothing at all.
For now that she is governor, Brewer has signed an immigration bill that spits in Lady Liberty's face.
The new law seeks to slam shut that golden door. It goes so far as to make it a crime not to carry papers proving you are not just some tempest-tossed soul who arrived in this country unbidden.
Or maybe Brewer does not know her family's history.
Most likely, she imagines there is a difference between the Europeans who sought refuge here in times past and Hispanics who dare to cross into her state.
I cannot answer those questions because my inquires regarding her family's arrival in America were met with silence.
That's just a politician's silence, though.
The silence to listen to is the one invoked by the Statue of Liberty's inscription, the poem in which Emma Lazarus describes how Lady Liberty announces her invitation to the huddled masses.

My ancestors came through Ellis Island, too
They had to go through immigration, show papers and get medically checked. Then they had to go get jobs because there was no welfare. Learning English was job #1.
Back to the good ol’ days of Lady Liberty sounds real good to me. Or at least, to using the same immigration rules and checks Mexico uses on its Southern border.
PS: If sending these trespassers back to their homeland is a violation of their human rights,, then why do “we” force the school kids to “celebrate” their native culture?

Might be appropriate to set off the ‘wanker’ in the author’s name as being added by someone here and not listed that way in the source.
I consider the article to be hate speech, and I mean that in all sincerity, because it intentionally seeks to mislead readers. The editor and the author should be ashamed of themselves. Still, it is not proper to alter the author’s name in the title. I thought we applied standards higher than that.

My family had to go to a third country and wait.
The US had already fulfilled its allotment of Italians, so my grandparents went to Canada to join other relatives. They came to the US under the Canadian allotment, even though they were from Italy.
And yes, they waited their turn.

If I (middle aged white guy in Texas) get pulled over in my truck, I am required to produce my DL and my PROOF of liability insurance.
As a private contractor, I’m required to sign IRS paperwork proving I’m a US citizen, show my SS# and again, have personal liability insurance.
If I want to buy a house or a truck or enroll in school, I have to provide all these and more info.
WHY the F%@# should it be any different for ANYONE else?

My grandfather could have been one of those people standing in line...legally. So was my grandmother (both on my mom’s side).
My great great grandfather (on dad’s side) gave four years of his life as a volunteer in the 5th Wisconsin Infantry. I’d say he repaid his admission ticket. (By the way, I’m still waiting for the reparations from the black community for the cost of liberating them. Oh heck, let’s just call it even.)
These people, like the Governor’s ancestor, came here LEGALLY. Not ILLEGALLY. As though every criminal, drug dealer and sponger around the world has a RIGHT to come here and mooch off of us.
