Jeb Bush carries the Bush political torch

Talk privately to just about any leading Republican about the 2012 presidential race, and you’ll often hear a sentence that starts with: “If his last name were ...”

They’re talking about the former two-term governor of one of America’s largest states who is a reformer, a policy wonk and a savvy pol who left office on good terms — and whose last name happens to be Bush.

Were he not the brother of a recently departed and unpopular president, there is little doubt that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush would be an obvious, and formidable, White House prospect for the GOP.

Yet even with the family baggage, many Republicans remain convinced Bush could be a strong contender.

Shirley made no bones about the fact that Bush's performance in the Nashua debate confirmed for Reagan what he already suspected...that GHW Bush did not handle pressure very well, AT ALL. Shirley actually said that Reagan (at the time) did not think Bush was qualified for the Oval Office.

Shirley did confirm what you said, that Reagan came to respect Bush as a loyal ally while he was VP.

I agree with you on how Reagan would view Palin.

One more President from the same damn family and you know this country has been turned into a banana republic.

There are 1/3 of a billion people in the US, and this is the best we can do?

Today I lost respect for Marco Rubio, who Jeb “open borders” Bush supports.

Beware of RINOs that pretend to be conservatives.

Jeb’s son, Jorge Bush, a strong supporter of illegal aliens, is waiting in the wings too.

All the Bushes have a liberal bent. Good bye to them all. I won’t vote for any of them.

In Tennessee, the W administration backed 41 crony liberal Lamar Alexander over conservative Ed Bryant in the US Senate primary. Senator Lamar voted to confirm Sotomayor for the Supreme Court. Thanks W, thanks Lamar! Real smart!

The surefire way to kill whats left of the Republican party is to nominate a Bush.

Send Jeb back with his free-spending wife back to wherever they came from, never to be seen again.

Please, please, NO!

I though Bush’s reactions to Gordon Humphey’s last ditch plea to include the others, “I’ve worked all my life for this and I’m not giving it up.” sounds eerily like something Mittens would say. These Eastern snobs think the Presidency belongs to them not to the hoi polloi:

“When Bush came out of his holding room and headed to the stage, Humphrey pleaded one last time to include the others in the name of “party unity.” Bush spat back at Humphrey, whom he loathed, “No f—ing way! I’ve worked all my life for this and I’m not giving it up. . . . I’ve done more for party unity than you’ll ever know!””

Yep, and in the book Shirley, while he didn't come out and explicitly say it, strongly hinted that the whole debate was a setup to put Bush on the spot because of the Reagan camp's suspicion that Bush would wilt under pressure.

That's the way I remember it. I'll see if I can look up the passage.

We have to bring an end to the Bush Dynasty. There should be no heirs in politics.

As a speaker, Jeb Bush is a mammoth bore. He can’t even tell a joke and make it work. Remember the listening tour that he, Eric Cantor, and, I believe, Mitt Romney went on? Bush trying to connect with voters in a restaurant was just pathetic. He was so desperately trying to be relevant and noticed. What is it with that family that makes them think they have an entitlement to be elected to high office? Noblesse oblige? I will never vote for another Bush. NEVER.

It would be a colossal humiliation for him to run and to be whipped like a yard dog by Palin. He would never want to take that chance.

But you are right. As a campaigner, he is even more listless than his father.

I think Reagan would have naturally preferred Palin just because their personalities seem so similar.

Tell you what, the funk this country is in will last until 2012 'cause there isn't any "hope" going around- no matter what the liar-in-chief spews. Sarah will be there to give hope to those who see the end to this nightmare coming by then.

Thankfully, the Bushes are history. But the last thing we needed during this Dem-induced equity/mortage/swindle/collapse/depression was a phony black president. He's no black: he has no personal pride and takes no pride in this country. His spouse made this apparent with her 'pride in America' comment.

Just read the NR article you posted. It's all in there, verbatim from the book:
"Sears’s plan was to have Reagan relent at the last minute and invite the other candidates to participate. That would allow Reagan to appear magnanimous, and the maneuver would embarrass Bush into allowing the other Republicans — Senators Bob Dole and Howard Baker, Congressmen Phil Crane and John Anderson, and former Texas governor John Connally — onto the stage. Or perhaps it would create such chaos as to prevent Bush from winning the debate. Years later Charlie Black told me, “We knew he would choke.” Sears was blunter: “Our job was to show that Bush was not capable of being president.”"
Maybe Sears and Black embellished a little when Shirley interviewed them. Who knows. :)
