Skip to comments.White House reporters afraid to criticize the White House

Politico's Josh Gerstein and Patrick Gavin have a long article describing the growing anger of the White House press corps towards the Obama White House. Many of the grievances are petty, though some are serious and substantive (involving lack of transparency and media manipulation), but the passage that I found most revealing is this one:
Much of the criticism is off the record, both out of fear of retaliation and from worry about appearing whiny. But those views were voiced by a cross section of the television, newspaper and magazine journalists who cover the White House.

Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Gee, I wonder why.
Scared and totally agree with them too.
And yet, they weren’t afraid to criticize President Bush. What is the difference?
Of course they can’t complain. They can’t even talk with their heads up Obama’s colon....
“...both out of fear of retaliation...”
This phrase alone suggests a REAL news story of historically unprecedented magnitude.
Yes, they are.
In fact, I really think they’re afraid to NOT PRAISE B.H.O.
And now 0 will give a speech about his administration being the most transparent in history.
Salon, this is a liberal site, right? Too bad that are staying quiet about it. There job is to speak up. Wonder if they know something??? Scary ship we are riding.
The difference is that the Bush administration never threatened to cut off their access whereas both the Obama and Clinton administrations have.
Helen Thomas made a comment about Obama’s “Nixonian” treatment of the press and was immediately given a time out in the second row.
Ya gotta be tough when yer dumb...or nuanced...or NYTed-intellectual.
Although the press is in bed with the Democrats dresssed in their lettered MSNBCCBCABC crotchless cheerleader lingerie on, at some point they will get around to thinking about the reason, rights and responsibility of a “free” press.
This is BS commie propaganda.
Bill clinton got at least five reporters fired from their jobs for reporting on his shennanigans. He used the regulatory agencies and the IRS to threaten their bosses.
I’m sure Obama would do the same thing, and probably be less subtle about it. That officer who was the first to challenge the birth issue was released from service, but then was fired from his job with a defense contractor, when the Pentagon threatened to cease doing business with his employer unless he was fired.
This is more than just threatening not to give reporters access. Because none of them are getting any access anyway. It’s approaching a year since Obama’s last press conference. They don’t get access, they get news releases, which they are obliged to print. Or prime-time TV shows entirely on Obama’s terms.
And not ONE SINGLE cocktail party for the press since the inauguration. That must REALLY have them upset, after all the good times during the clinton years.
Poor babies. It’s like spousal abuse or even child abuse. And they just have to take it.
How about, “Reporters in Venezuela (America) work for Hugo Chavez (Barack Obama).
I’m surprised this appeared in Salon, which is pretty liberal and could be expected to host only Obama devotees.
But it is very scary; the press is getting a taste of living in Castro’s Cuba, Hugo’s Venezuela, or a host of scummy African dictatorships where the press has to tread carefully. Right now they’re just worried about being denied “access;” wait till they start having to worry about criminal charges for criticizing or even just revealing unapproved information about The One.
cojones and a spine
This is from Salon???
Is that a pig flying by my window?
When Pravda is doing a better job than our MSM...
“How could you possibly be a minimally credible White House reporter if you have that fear? Doesn’t that unwillingness rather obviously render their reporting worthless?”
Why YES..it does make their reporting worthless(eye roll). Glad to see some in the MSM are getting a clue as to why nobody trusts them anymore and why nobody bothers to read/watch their crap.
Anita Dunn, Obama’s former Communications Director, discusses how they circumvented and controlled the media.
(In first 3 1/2 minutes. Later in this video she says Mao Zedong is one of her favorite “philosophers.”)
I almost hold the SRM more responsible for what has happened to this country than I do Uh-bama and his regime! Almost!!
They made this bed (with compost and a shovel) now let them lay in it.
...a secret-police organization employing underhanded and terrorist methods against persons suspected of disloyalty
They sure didn't hesitate to reveal information about the previous administration. If I didn't know better, I would say the media is a little biased.
Yes, the MSM are leftwing political organizations who only hire leftwing hacks to campaign against Republicans 24/7/365, for 40 years running.
They are not biased.
They are doing their job, their only job.
Again...typical reaction to a dictator who will reek vengeance on all who oppose his commands.
I don't think so. During Bams campaign, he had lawyers continually threatening the press. Now that he's Prez, he has the FCC, IRS et al to go after anyone who strays from the "party" line. And being ruined is the least of it. There ARE worse things that could happen. Remember we are talking about an Alinsky Chicago thug.
Does this mean the lapdogs want to be watchdogs now?
Il Duce knows how to control the message.
I read an article a number of years back that described how newspaper editors during the forties and fifties (before the advent of television)used to assign reporters to their Washington Bureau for only a year or two. This was to prevent the reporters from developing too close of a personal relationship with those about whom they were reporting.
But today, all of that is gone. Once television became the dominant medium the “pretty boy” reporters, who love to hear themselves speak as well as see themselves on TV, took over.
This is why we have a cadre of reporters that are vulnerable to intimidation. They are petrified of losing their gig.
It is truly a sad state of affairs.
As a matter of fact, the opinion piece/article mentions that the press never complained about the lack of transparency during the Bush years: “(animosity strangely absent during the full-scale information blackout of the Bush years).”
Indeed. The lies in the quoted statement from Salon defy even Joseph Goebbels. Forgive me if I am unable to muster any sympathy for Ernst Rohm’s little group. They were willing to be used.
The MSM has played the part of being two bit streetwalking whores for Obamao and now are crying because he is pimp slapping them around like the two bit streetwalking whores they are.
Sheesh....even Tiger Woods trollops were smarter then that and they do not have the “education and intelligence” that those MSM whores claim they do.
Maybe someone should start publishing unconfirmed rumors from a source deep inside the whitehouse press pool and see what happens.
Just to stir things up a bit, you see.
White House reporters afraid to criticize the White HouseNo! (Something can't be right with this headline.)
What is BS commie propaganda?
Not sure your meaning..?
The commie press “reporting” that the other commie press is mad at their commie leader.
Their 40 year long lie is over, and they are desperate to try and stop more Americans from knowing their true agenda.
Ah, so you mean they’re just trying to cover their butts a little so that people will keep listening to them. Yes.
I have a deep feeling of foreboding and unease that I cannot shake.
Sure sounds like the 0bama regime in action!
Afraid, or don't want to? Makes no difference: The press has never been trustworthy, but these days it hits new lows.
I've observed outright dishonesty "even" in the WSJ; it's not too long before I close them all out for failing to be even halfway-reliable sources.
