Why Obama Should Not Have Checked 'Black' On His census Form
Elizabeth Chang April 29, 2010
I have always considered Barack Obama to be biracial, and I had hoped that his election would help our country move beyond the tired concept of race. Unfortunately, the president is not getting with my program.
Although I knew Obama self-identifies as African American, I was disappointed when I read that that's what he checked on his census form. The federal government, finally heeding the desires of multiracial people to be able to accurately define themselves, had changed the rules in 2000, so he could have also checked white. Or he could have checked "some other race." Instead, Obama went with black alone.
Despite being raised by a white mother and white grandparents, despite have spent most of his childhood in the rainbow state of Hawaii, despite clearly being comfortable in almost any type of crowd (though I suppose Tea Partyers might give him pause), the president apparently considers himself only black.
"I self-identify as an African American. That's how I am treated and that's how I am viewed. And I'm proud of it," he has said. But he also argued in his famous speech about race that he could no more disown the Reverend Jeremiah Wright "than I can my white grandmother." With his census choice, he has done precisely that.

1. I am a man.
2. My father was black and my mother was white. I identify myself as black because I am. So is he.
He might appear black , but I think he is a Indonesian, more so than a American.
I checked “Other” and wrote in “American.”
What’s a census form?
He lived in Indonesia, that didnt change his lineage. His father was Kenyan which, as you know, is in Africa. He's black.
But FRiend, that is an emotional statement. The census is about biological reality. If you were to have a child with a white woman, your child would most likely have quite fair skin, and the shape of his or her features may or may not appear African. That would be a biological result, no matter how you feel.
Example: Here is the actress Victoria Rowell, on the right, whose father was black and mother was white. The young woman on the left is her biological daughter, Maya, whose father is white.
Culturally, he is a foreigner. Not an American.
For his appearance he is mulatto. An African would call him “light” or “bright” or plain, old fashioned mulatto. Probably ask whats wrong with him.
Everyone including himself positioned him as “post”racial. My point is both he and many many people are the opposite and the furthest thing from the truth. He aint even American.
What census needs to do if they want to know statistics on the black /white community is amend their form for the inclusion of mulatto. There are more than enough to warrant the change.
So, he’s lied once again.
And what type of "African" would that be? Ive yet to visit Africa so I have no personal experience of how the people there would view me or someone like me. But I do know Africa is a large continent hosting a myriad of peoples. Khoisans, and Berbers for example are light-skinned yet are indigenous to the continent of Africa. They are Africans.
As for skin color, black can range from light brown to nearly black. Youre free of course to call Hussein anything youd like. But, as I've already stated, he and I share a similar lineage. I know I am black as is he.
The perennial affirmative action hire that has accomplished nothing in his life.
