WASHINGTON, April 29 (UPI) -- U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus formally announced a policy change Thursday clearing the decks for women to serve on submarines.
Women had never been allowed to serve on submarines in the 110-year history of the underwater force.
The new coed era will begin once selected female officers complete 15 months of training. The plan calls for three women to be assigned to eight crews attached to four guided-missile attack and ballistic missile submarines, the Navy said on its Web site.
The change had been anticipated since Defense Secretary Robert Gates formally presented a letter to congressional leaders Feb. 19 notifying them of the Navy's desire to reverse the policy of prohibiting submarine service to women.

Well, it’s not just the submarine that’s going to have a lot of seamen in it.

There is no privacy on a boat.

Wow.... just wow. I'm totally against this idea too, but these are two of the stupidest, most sexist remarks I think I've ever read! Any male sailor on a sub can make a simple mistake and be the cause of death of all his male submariner's also. It has nothing to do with being a female.
I guess they will have to find other ways to satisfy their oral fixations.
One question I’d like to ask the Secretary: How exactly does this improve the capabilities of our sub fleet?

Women Officers on subs, No smoking on subs, Open gays, and taking away Burger King from Solders in Afghanistan has nothing to do with social trends.
It all has to do with disruption and demoralization at a time of war.
Really, we must ask “why now?” “Why is this so darned important in the middle of war?
