White House Declares Halt on New Offshore Drilling
Aol News ^ | 30/4/10 | Doug Simpson, Lauren Frayer

Posted on 04/30/2010 7:15:58 AM PDT by Eleutheria5

The White House said today it is halting all new offshore drilling in U.S. waters until there's an "adequate review" of a massive 600-mile wide oil slick that has begun to lap up on Louisiana's coast.

The federal government is defending its response to the spill, which began with an April 20 blast on one of British Petroleum's offshore rigs that burned for two days before sinking. Rescuers saved 115 workers but 11 are presumed dead. BP is responsible for the cleanup, and it wasn't until Thursday -- nine days after the explosion -- that the White House declared it "a leak of national significance."

White House senior adviser David Axelrod told ABC's "Good Morning America" today that President Barack Obama has decided that there will be no new domestic offshore drilling until an investigation of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill incident is complete.

"All he has said is that he is not going to continue the moratorium on drilling but ... no additional drilling has been authorized and none will until we find out what happened here and whether there was something unique and preventable here," Axelrod said, defending the administration's policy.

BP isn’t my “favorite” oil company. They have in the past too many safety violations.

But I believe they have done much to improve.

However, I would be very surpised if they were at fault in this case. This was at the stage of a Transocean operation, by Transocean staff with Transocean equipment. Transocean is a quality company and I am not suggesting they made a mistake, but it was an event where BP and their partners were righting the check and had only a few people on board.

So when does the regular crowd start making the wild accusation that Obama and Biden made their way out to the platform in a little rowboat and planted the explosives themselves?

I wonder if Rosie O'Donnell will get on television and talk about steel melting...

Nobody will stop him if we don’t stop first and say “under what authority or jurisdiction are you doing this?”

Bull Sh*t!

Here’s why:

“The White House said today it is halting all new offshore drilling in U.S. waters until there’s an “adequate review” of a massive 600-mile wide oil slick that has begun to lap up on Louisiana’s coast.”

If this were a legitamite concern, they would halt EXISTING drilling, NOT NEW drilling.

And just what the hell constitutes an “adequate review”?

This is more double speak from that Marxist Son-of-a-whore usurper presently occupying the Oval Office.

This is the same contingent/worldview that kept the US from building any new nuCLEAR power plants for 30 years. Never mind that the safety protocols used all over eurabia were developed here in the states.

Feeling manipulated?

Welcome to the Minerals Management Service (MMS) Website.
http://mms.gov/ooc/newweb/directorspage/leadership.htm

The MMS is proud of the important work we do for our nation and its economy from within the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The MMS plays a key role in realizing President Obama’s and Secretary Salazar’s vision for energy security for the 21st century. Under their leadership, MMS has already begun the enormous work of implementing that vision - by continuing to support safe development of conventional energy sources while also moving this nation toward a clean, renewable energy future.

The MMS is responsible for ensuring the effective management of offshore renewable energy, such as wind, wave, and ocean current energy. We are also responsible for conventional energy and mineral resources on the nation’s Outer Continental Shelf, including the environmentally safe exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas. In addition, we ensure the collection and distribution of revenues for minerals developed on federal and American Indian lands, as well as offshore areas.

As a federal agency, we offer our commitment that we will continue to work to develop energy from offshore sources responsibly and to develop clean, renewable sources of energy; we will protect the marine environment and help power the economy for future generations. Our principle focus in all these areas will be service to the American people.

I’ve got an idea! Why don’t we open up ANWR and NPRA for production while we wait for review?

I second that motion!

The reality is that the direct costs of the incident are small compared to the costs associated with damaged reputation, new regulations and resources removed from other work to clean up a mess.

Was this rig one of the closest to land? I thought I heard it was only 3 miles off the coast. That would make it easier to sabatoge and in a better position to make sure the oil got to the beach. We have to watch these people like a hawk, they are capable of evil.

I’m just asking the question. Where does the POTUS get the authority to unilaterally shut down a large swath of America’s productive commerce?

What’s he going to “declare” a moratorium on tomorrow? Anything that strikes his fancy?

One rig is down, so supply should not be affected in the near term.

Once investigations and failure analysis are complete, I imagine that many other companies operating off-shore rigs will be doing investigations to see that similar scenarios do not exist. This could require stopping or slowing production. Who knows what new govt regulations and mandated investigations will be required, that could also effect production/price.

They have in the past too many safety violations. But I believe they have done much to improve.

Must be a difference between divisions. This is exploration. We are in pipelines. Our entire safety manual is strictly for the pipeline division.

when all the beaches of the entire gulf coast are coated in oil and the birds are coated in oil... there will be 24/7 coverage of the poor animals and Obama will get all the blame.
