White House Declares Halt on New Offshore Drilling
Aol News ^ | 30/4/10 | Doug Simpson, Lauren Frayer

Posted on 04/30/2010 7:15:58 AM PDT by Eleutheria5

The White House said today it is halting all new offshore drilling in U.S. waters until there's an "adequate review" of a massive 600-mile wide oil slick that has begun to lap up on Louisiana's coast.

The federal government is defending its response to the spill, which began with an April 20 blast on one of British Petroleum's offshore rigs that burned for two days before sinking. Rescuers saved 115 workers but 11 are presumed dead. BP is responsible for the cleanup, and it wasn't until Thursday -- nine days after the explosion -- that the White House declared it "a leak of national significance."

White House senior adviser David Axelrod told ABC's "Good Morning America" today that President Barack Obama has decided that there will be no new domestic offshore drilling until an investigation of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill incident is complete.

"All he has said is that he is not going to continue the moratorium on drilling but ... no additional drilling has been authorized and none will until we find out what happened here and whether there was something unique and preventable here," Axelrod said, defending the administration's policy.

Why is no one mentioning the possibility of a terrorist hiring out to the oil company and then bombing the rig & well?

I forgot to include, some of the leaking is from the remaining riser pipe. There are pictures of it.

Isn’t it ironic that this disaster and the coal mine disasters happened at the same time.

Many companies in the energy business has cut way back on personnel since the O clown was elected. We're down to the bare bones in operating a chemical plant at my location. Where there were 3 people working, now it's 1.
A huge significant safety issue if working by yourself with chemicals.

The companies knew that O dumbo was ready to destroy the domestic energy sector. He has always been against coal and oil. He wants windmills and solar panels.

All these recent accidents are Obama's fault.

Well isn’t that the whole idea? Radical environmentalists were angry at Obama for saying he’d allow drilling offshore, and voila... an oil well with all sorts of failsafes on it poof, goes boom.

I’d say it’s the kill the whalers crowd that blew up this well.

Also leaks like a “sieve” into the bay near Santa Barbara California. I think this oil spill hype is not the crisis the politicians and environs would have us believe. Just another way to control the energy sector and the people.

Doesn’t seem like 1,000 gallons a day is that large of a spill when the ocean floors seeps 50 BBl. a day according to story below!!!

“If your dog got loose and went down to the beach, it would take you an hour to clean his feet.” Still worse, the putrid smell of hydrogen sulfide often hangs over the area like vapor from a truckload of rotten eggs. The culprit is not a leaking oil well, but nature. The ocean floor is spilling large quantities of oil and natural gas through fissures that geoloists call seeps. Says Petroleum Geologist Robert Gaal of the California State lands commission: “There are thousands of them down there. It’s like a sieve.”

Thanks AGAIN for the info. I had heard concerns of the wreckage of the platform sitting on the well head and hampering access for capping, etc. That does not seem to be the case though?

No, the rig came down away from it.

See this drawing of the locations.

Also I have watched video of the submersible ROVs trying to operate the BOP on the wellhead. It did not take an impact.

Somebody help me out with something that has been puzzling me. If oil drilling is increased and refining capablities are not increased, since refineries are running at full capcity already, how will this increase the end product?

Oil is a commodity. The price of a commodity is set by market forces.

Our refining capacity is about triple our domestic production. So every increased barrel brought up in the US is a barrel that doesn’t need imported.

“Seriously, why would he WAIT to send in Fed resources!”

He sees some gain in waiting, some gain in making the crisis worse. Probably to justify some draconian action.
