The top government official in Nassau County says hes willing to look into the feasibility of Long Island seceding from New York to become an independent state.
In a letter last week, County Executive Edward Mangano joined several local officials who support measures in the state Legislature to probe the possibility.
The concept is one that has been discussed and often laughed at for many years.
The other top elected official on Long Island, Suffolk County Executive and gubernatorial candidate Steve Levy, says the statehood idea has no future. It would have to be approved by Congress and the president.
Nassau County has one of the highest per capita incomes in the country, and residents there often complain that they also pay among the most in taxes.
“residents there often complain that they also pay among the most in taxes”
If they don’t like the taxes, they should move.
Long Island a state?
Bwahaha!
they could become The Iced Tea State...
And we can split California in three too! Two senators for the coastal insanity, four for the rest of California... Heck, we can just call the coastal state ‘Sea Breeze.’
Sure, why not!?! We have a ways to go to get up to that 60 number

Illinois is ready to make Chicago its own state.
NH Article 10.... Only state left with the right to revolution left in the constitution.
If New York is to Split then
Admission of West Virginia to the Union (formed from what was western Virginia) may have written this out of the Constitution, but that seems more likely to be uniquely connected with the Civil War.
Jack
Note to the ignorant: Nassau and Suffolk Counties last voted GOP in a Presidential election in 1988.
what I want to know is how do we make Florida a commonwealth like puerto Rico? seriously... what are the benefits of being a state, besides paying massive federal taxes, that puerto Rico doesn’t get?
LIdiots only pay “most in taxes” due to their high property taxes which go toward LOCAL services. While LI does have some very wealthy areas such as Old Brookville and Kings Park, most of Lawn Guyland is middle class. NYC actually has a higher % of high earners, let alone millionaires, who truly subsidize the rest of the state.
BTW: With a median income of only $17,000, few on PR would get hit with an income tax.
You forgot the:
without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.
Why can’t Israel just annex those counties?
“There is, of course, a slight problem with Article 4, Sec. 3 of the Constitution that says: but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State.
Admission of West Virginia to the Union (formed from what was western Virginia) may have written this out of the Constitution, but that seems more likely to be uniquely connected with the Civil War.”
Remember, at the time, 1863, Virginia was not part of the Union (at least as far as they were concerned).
Nassau County would be better suited to become a borough of NYC through annexation. Note that Brooklyn is on LI. Also Suffolk County is likely currently a lost cause.
Queens too; I forgot until I saw the map.
Because Jews on the Island are outnumbered considerably by Italians. Nassau and Suffolk are the second and third most Italian counties in the US by ancestry % (Richmond County, aka Staten Island is first).
