DeMint snubs former Sen. Coats, endorses underdog in Indiana primary
By Aaron Blake - 04/20/10 08:52 AM ET Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) is endorsing state Sen. Marlin Stutzman in the GOP primary for retiring Sen. Evan Bayh's (D-Ind.) seat, according to Fox News.
DeMint's endorsement comes just days after Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) backed another lesser-known candidate, Rep. John Hostettler (R-Ind.). Former Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) is the favorite in the GOP primary, but thanks to a late start and some less-than-outstanding fundraising numbers, the May 4 primary looks to be up in the air.
From Fox:
With the Republican primary in Indiana's US Senate race just two weeks out, candidate Marlin Stutzman picked-up an endorsement from a potential future colleague. Senator Jim DeMint from South Carolina told Fox News exclueively that Stutzman was his choice in the Hoosier State's five-candidate GOP primary.
DeMint disclosed to Fox News senior producer Trish Turner late Monday about his decision to back Stutzman.
"I like Dan (Coats). I like John (Hostettler), but we need new faces here," said DeMint.
The Palmetto State Senator continued, "(Stutzman's) not as well known as the other two, but what we've seen ... (Stutzman's) won just about all the straw polls. The activists are beginning to know who he is, and that's the reason I decided to get in. I'm trying to give some spotlight to the underdogs."
DeMint, of course, is making a habit of endorsing anti-establishment conservative Senate candidates. He has already backed Chuck DeVore in California and was one of the first to back Marco Rubio over Charlie Crist in Florida. Last week, DeMint backed Weld County, Colo., District Attorney Ken Buck over former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton in that GOP Senate primary.
Administrator should change title to Today or Tuesday since it isn’t Monday anymore.
I was at the polls at 6:05 AM. There were only two other voters there.
DeMint is good, but he is a Romney man, and, like Romney, backs McPain in AZ. I prefer Hostettler for IN, but I believe Coats will win easily on name ID alone.
I met Hostettler once. At a Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology alum meeting. We all had to stand up and announce our name, major, year of graduation, and present employer. This dip—— announce that he worked for the US government. And he smirked like it was funny.
Any congresscritter that announces that he is employed by the US government is not conservative. I also saw how lousy he campaigned against Ellsworth 4 years ago. Hostettler would not run on a support the troops theme and told Bush to stay out of his district. And Hostettler’s campaign manager was his sister. Can we say nepotism?
In District 9 is there anyone who can give Sodrel a run for his money? Sick of seeing his name running against Hill
Last night, FNC reported that Dem Elsworth “had already raised $1 million while all GOP canditates had not raised $1 million combined.
What FNC did not report is the Evan Bayh gave Elsworth $1 million. Elsworth did not raise anything....and will have A LOT of trouble raising money especially when he voted with Pelosi 89% of the time include all the key votes include deathcare.
Good luck! Visclosky needs to be sent packing, and that Leyva fellow who has already run for the seat 4 or 5 times obviously won’t do the trick.
Former Congressman Mike Sodrel has two viable primary opponents, Todd Young (http://toddyoungforcongress.com/) and Travis Hankins (http://www.travishankins.com/). They both sound excellent, but each is from the district’s fringes (not from the heart of the district like Sodrel) and I would bet that Sodrel’s higher name recognition will give him the victory (especially against divided opposition).
Sodrel has run against Hill 4 times already, winning only in 2004 but having run very competitive races in 2002 and 2006 (he got blown put in 2008 with Obama on the ballot). If he wins the nomination, I think that he’ll improve his record against Hill to 2-3 and send Hill packing for good (redistricting should make the IN-09 more Republican).
Thanks. Soddies opponents look like young’uns, but I my @ss is tired of the same old Hill/Sodrel fight around here. we need some new direction and Sodrel isnt anything new just another millionaire looking for political advantage IMHO
You’ll be glad to hear that Young won the GOP primary in IN-09, and Sodrel finished third!
