Colb criticized the tipping system in general as facilitating the kind of discrimination that Lynn uncovered.

“Like the employer who fails to promote an employee because she does not sufficiently conform to the feminine stereotype, restaurant owners share in the blame for utilizing a pay structure that turns unenlightened customers into the ‘boss’ in charge of determining a server’s take-home pay,” she said.

Instead, he found that waitresses with larger bra sizes received higher tips — as did women with blonde hair and slender bodies.....

I guess he didn't bother to consider men who wait on tables. Such an egalitarian professor!

Ordinarily, I pop into a thread and make a quick, humorous post, but I believe this subject warrants a more complete examination before I comment.

I have two questions about this "study:"

Though most customers say they reward service, Lynn reports that quality of service has less than a 2-percent effect on the actual tip.
How did they determine "quality of service?" Hopefully they did something other than just ask the waitress.

....restaurant owners share in the blame for utilizing a pay structure that turns unenlightened customers into the ‘boss’ in charge of determining a server’s take-home pay,”
Was there any attempt to breakdown the tipping by the customers gender? Are the female customers equally guilty here?

Inquiring minds want to know.

[Prof. Sherry F. Colb] suggested instead that a uniform percentage “gratuity” be charged with each meal.

Mandatory, of course.
Like mandatory "charity" (our pathological welfare system) this cannot work and will not end well.
Personally, I will not ever patronize an establishment that institutes this policy; I do realize that the activists will campaign energetically for a local state or federal law to make it a crime not to pay the mandatory "gratuity," and I have been to Europe, where the practice is quite common, but there are ways around that, too.

Losers everywhere.

SEIU in aprons.

I hate unions, I hate coercion and I hate euphemisms.

I think the federal ADA act is a good thing but I am eternally hostile to people with mental health issues ending up as elected officials, or as academics with an obsessive compulsion to run the tiniest details of all our lives; and of course, all our choices.

I could have told’em that without a study...Everybody sort of knows that already. But Colb’s reaction is classic...

Men like women with big boobs because of two reason and evolution...

1. They can't run away as fast

2. Their far easier to tip over

These two factor seem increase in direct proportion to boobs size

So the bigger women's boob the easier she was for a man to catch and have sex with her

I think I will get a grant to study this

“I am disappointed but not surprised to learn that female servers with larger breasts receive more generous tips,” said Prof. Sherry F. Colb, law, who studies sexual equality has small boobs.

seems to me now days, that the more "hip" or "trendy" the place is, the more likely it will have a high ratio of the Jennine Garaffalo types to anything that resembles good looking, let alone good looking and have a playboy body

I go to restaurants and bars often because I rarely cook for myself. I tip 20% for all servers but I tip more than that if I enjoy the server or the server shows me some extra effort. I have my favorite servers in several places and I tip them more because they are pretty, pleasant and take the time to know me.

Breast size isn’t as important to me as overall beauty and pleasantness. Yes, I discriminate. But I still tip 20% for male or unattractive servers so anything I tip extra is for my enjoyment of the experience and that enjoyment is enhanced considerably when I’m served by an attractive and friendly waitress. In a sense, I’m paying a self-imposed pretty waitress tax. And, trust me, in this world of tattoo-spackled fatties with metal dangling from their faces, some friendly chit-chat (not to mention the occasional hug) with an attractive, upbeat young lady is worth the extra money to me.

If a bunch of ugly people don’t like that fact, too bad.

I agree with the tipping BS. There should be no tipping. However, I disagree with this survey, while some people may tip according to the way a waitress looks, most of them, IMO, tip according to how well they are served. That is the way I tip, quite reluctantly I might add since tipping is BS. I don't tip other people when they do their job and it isn't up to me to pay the wages directly out of my pocket. A meal is supposed to cover the cost of doing business, if the owners can't pay their staff enough out of their profits then the cost of the meal should be raised and NO gratuity added on to the check. The full price should show in the menu, period.

However, most people have been brainwashed from birth that somehow we should dig deeper into our pockets and actually pay the wages of the employees of certain businesses and I doubt if tipping will ever go away.
