Arizona to eliminate speed cameras on highway (instituted by past governor Janet Napolitano)

PHOENIX – Arizona is ending a groundbreaking and contentious program that put speed cameras along Phoenix-area freeways and in vans deployed across the state.

Opponents have argued the cameras open the door for wider "Big Brother" surveillance and are more about making money than safety. The program has been the target of an initiative measure proposed for the November ballot.

Even Gov. Jan Brewer has said she doesn't like the cameras, and her intention to end the program was first disclosed in her January budget proposal. That was followed by a non-renewal letter sent by the Arizona Department of Public Safety this week to the private company that runs the program.

The camera program was instituted by Brewer's predecessor, Janet Napolitano, now the Homeland Security secretary. Cameras were introduced in September 2008 and were added until all 76 were up and running by January 2009.

Good, now get these Orwellian scameras the hell out of LOUISIANA as well.

Criminal LOUISIANA politicians and lobbyists threw their support to Redflex in exchange for cash and other kickbacks generated by the damn scameras that target citizens in the greater New Orleans area.

It's nothing but damn FRAUD and EXTORTION perpetuated on the citizenry by a tyrannical bunch of scumbag criminal lowlifes.

And yet I suspect the real reason for the termination of this program is that the contractor in charge of running the operation has decided it wasn't a very good business model.

There was a story a while back about a city in the southwestern U.S. that eliminated its red-light camera program -- because there were so many illegal aliens driving unregistered cars with fake license plates that they couldn't raise the revenue they expected.

Here, in Yakima, WA, the city council just voted down the installation of red light cameras. Good for them.

The camera were really about closing a budget gap

'Closing a budget gap' is libspeak for coming up with new ways to extort money from the people, because you have already transferred more wealth to the non productive members of society from the productive than you had.

Mr. JAG is correct. You must be served, or it is null & void.

Ironically, in the UK where they have the same type of cameras it is not uncommon for the people to take a tire full of gasoline put it on the camera, and light it afire.

This just goes to show you that even in Brittan, which has been disarmed and ‘pussified’ has more balls than we Americans!

>The company would keep part of the traffic fines.

Sounds like a conflict of interest to me; if they made ‘mistaken’ equipment then they get more money.

Just so you’re aware, they kept 60% of the fine. I think my uncle was working with these when he told me that.

Anyways, I am happy to see these gone!

God Bless the people of Arizona and Gov. Brewer! First, a rock solid stand against illegal immigration, now a stand against these foolish traffic cameras and more invasion of our freedoms.

Rick Perry of TX, are you paying attention?
