Gore buys Montecito Villa for $8,875,000

In a move that critics may cite as his own inconvenient truth, former Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have added a house in secluded Montecito to their real estate holdings.

The couple spent $8,875,000 on a gated ocean-view villa on 1 1/2 acres with a swimming pool, spa and fountains, according to real estate sources familiar with the deal. The Italian-style house has high ceilings with beams in the public rooms, a family room, a wine cellar, terraces, six fireplaces, five bedrooms and nine bathrooms in more than 6,500 square feet of living space.

Montecito has long been a haven for Southern California's rich and famous, a spot where celebrity faces can blend into the crowd. Among the community's notable residents have been talk show giant Oprah Winfrey, actors Michael Douglas and Christopher Lloyd, and golfer Fred Couples. The 93108 ZIP Code, which includes the coastal hamlet, was ranked as America's seventh most expensive area last year by Forbes.

Word of the purchase was reported in late April in the Montecito Journal. Gore, 62, did not respond to The Times' requests for comment.

Three years ago, Gore added solar panels and other energy-saving features to his 10,000-square-foot mansion in Belle Meade, Tenn., after he had been criticized for the amount of energy the home used.

After serving as vice president from 1993 to 2001 and playing spokesman on global warming in his 2006 Academy Award-winning film "An Inconvenient Truth," Gore is now chairman of Current TV. He also is the founder and chairman of the Alliance for Climate Protection and a founder of the Beverly Hills-based environmental organization Live Earth.

Not bad for a candidate who would have been President - if his own home state of Tenn would have voted for him instead of voting heavily for Bush.

I think his income needs to be leveled to say $100,000 and the balanced redistributed to the needy!

The gospel according to Obama, there comes a time when you have enough. Does Gore have enough money yet? Or is it more along the lines of Soros?

From the comments section of the article:

Please don't fault Al Gore for buying a house that will
generate an energy bill bigger than some people's monthly
mortgage payments. Yes, Al's carbon footprint is big, but
he is a big, big man--a very big, important man, a thinker
of Big Ideas.

It doesn't matter that Al Gore doesn't quite live the sort
of lifestyle he preaches to the rest of us. He's allowed
to live the way he does (limousines, private jets, power-
hungry mansions, etc.) because he purchases carbon offsets,
which allow him do do whatever he wants. What's that you
say? You can't afford a carbon offset? Too bad--you'll
have to pay a carbon tax on your gasoline...what's that?
You can't afford gasoline with an added carbon tax? Too
bad--here's a bicycle. Have at it. But don't feel bad.
Remember, this is what's best for the polar bears.

Please don't be mean or angry toward this great, big man.
His ideas aren't for himself. He's only one person. His
ideas are meant for all of you, the little people. The
little, smelly people.

“A horse race between Edwards and Gore?”

Who can get lower than whale shit faster? My money has got to be on Bore...imagine buying an oceanfront mansion after scaring every school child in America out of their wits if they live near any body of water. I hate this bstrd.

It's the right thing to do for a compassionate earth dweller like Gore.

After all, if he didn't buy it an evil conservative republican probably would and exploit it to the point of destroying the planet.

I see it now, Algore IS the compassionate one.
