Whew, that was a long time ago...:-)
Forty years earlier, the liberal Northeast and the Left Coast voted for William McKinley and the Bible Belt voted for a man who promised to nationalize the railroads, limit the amount of property an individual could own, and institute an income tax.
That was an even longer time ago.
Maine doesn’t have a REAL Republican Party and haven’t for a loooong time. Platform or no, it’s still controlled by RHINOS.
There has always been a strong small government wing in the Republican Party, mostly Westerners as opposed to the progressives in the East. It seems to me that the Parties, with exceptions, have done a 180 since that scum TDR.
Simple. There were too many people apathetic to the goings on in D.C. Not so anymore.
My family has also been Republican since the Civil War.

By "TDR" I assume you mean FDR, unless you are conflating the two.
The proto-Socialist Populist movement was big in the Southeast and Midwest and horrified the at that time conservative Eastern Establishment. The Conservative Eastern Establishment is now the Liberal Eastern Establishment, though how this happened is a bit of a mystery.
When I was exiled from Idaho shortly after he and my Father died, a year apart, I found it was all too true.
"Also at the convention Saturday, a group of Knox County conservatives succeeded in tossing the old platform and adopting a new one.Steve Dyer of Rockland said the original platform, the same one adopted in 2008, was too vague. He says the new one reaffirms a pledge to the U.S. Constitution and the Maine Constitution not any specific party.
The platform was created by a team of 12 Republicans, some of whom also attend Tea Party events. They said they want to push the party back to its core values."
And that's all. Needless to say, the BDN isn't often confused with National Review.

Interestingly, in 1912 when TR ran as the Bull Moose candidate, Utah was one of only two states (the other being either Maine or Vermont; I can't remember which one) that went for William Howard Taft.
You're right; TR and FDR were a lot alike (though most people don't seem to notice).
“Term Limits” is a ridiculous and short-sighted provision. It guarantees a government in permanent chaos and turmoil run by non-elected permanent staffers.
Hi Ernest, thanks for the ping to the graphic. Lol, a cute one, really dangerous looking too.....!
I like those pictures of the little ones.
Vernal is nice and close to good fishing...and that dam.
[I like those pictures of the little ones.]
We all do Ernest and I appreciated the ping to it.
Mixed marriages will travel.
Exactly.
The meaning of “Mainstream” hasn’t changed.
The substantive content of Mainstream Republicanism in Maine has changed.
By definition, the Platform defines what is Mainstream.
RINOs might be unhappy with the new platform, but part of the reason for that is that they now know that they are no longer Mainstream.
Snowe will simply ignore the platform. Before people talk about beating Snowe and beating Collins, it’s important to remember that the Republicans don’t have any US Reps, or any recent ex Governors in Maine.
Arlen switched parties when he knew he would lose the Republican Primary.
If Snowe or Collins think they’ll lose the Republican Primary, they may think of switching to Democrat, or running as an Independent.
Is there a Republican in Maine strong enough to beat either Snowe or Collins in the Republican Primary?
What? Ron Paul is mentioned by name in the Maine GOP Platform.
There is a lot in the Maine GOP Platform that’s pure Ron Paul. And Ron Paul people and Tea Partiers are very close on a lot of the issues. It’s hard to tell sometimes whether an idea is a “Ron Paul” idea or a “Tea Party” idea.
The only thing that I can remember offhand in the Maine GOP Platform that many Ron Paul people would disagree with had to do with foreign policy and jihad.
Austrian Economics - Ron Paul
No One world government - Ron Paul (others too).
Go back to 2007 and watch a Republican debate. Ron Paul was the only candidate that focused extensively on the Constitution. Yes, the Tea Parties also focus on the Constitution, but back in 2007, it was Ron Paul.
Yes. In my opinion social issues should always drive economic ones, but I can see how the fiscal suicide that Obama wants us to do is the issue for many.
Re:
“First, we’re coming for the RINOs.
Then, we’re coming for the Socialists.
They SHOULD be afraid. Very afraid.”
Although I applaud your confidence, I might caution against an overindulgence in it at this point.
We certainly have made progress, but please bear in mind...;
....They still have air superiority, armored Divisions, serin nerve gas and nukes... and we don’t.
At least I don’t... do you?
