I've been meditation on this a while now and come to this conclusion:
As some people know that the NAME of a thing in older times would DEFINE the meaning & character of the person or object. Hence the name change that the Lord gave to Jacob (meaning: the deceiver) and changed to ISRAEL "He who struggled with man and God, and prevailed".
Also note how over the centuries that despite untold suffering & persecution they still remain but their oppressors can hardly be found!!
So to answer the question of the article, I would easily say "YES" howbeit the USA would lose the blessings attached to the effort to being their ally & friend in times of trouble.
The USA has just been around for a little more than 200 years vs 2000 years for the JEWS. We have helped them a lot and prospered for it but their ultimate protection & salvation is from the Almighty Himself.

A better question is can America survive without Israel. He who blesses Israel is blessed and he who curses Israel is cursed according to Holy Scripture.
If Israel, in the plan of The LORD, for any reason needs America, which may in some way symbolize The Church of The Living LORD, to come to it's aid we will.
For our sake we had better be for Israel. Israel needs none other than her LORD.
