Well, this uneducated slack-jawed yokel will take a stab at it, Mr, Scientist!

Um, because SPACE is STILL forming, the planets have been CHANGING since ‘The Big Bang’ and our Universe (and beyond!) will continue to DO SO for the next million billion YEARS or so?

I assume you forgot the /s tag?

I believe the article means that scientists are stumped as to the specific process that could cause such a major weather feature to disappear in such a short time.

More likely it’s related to a combination of Jupiter’s 12 earth-year year and the extended solar minimum.
