SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Newly released police records show a Utah man held in the slaying of his 4-year-old stepson became increasing violent toward the boy in the days leading up to the child's death, then disfigured the boy's face before burying his body in a canyon.
Police unearthed Ethan Stacy's body Tuesday, just 10 days after investigators say a Virginia judge sent the boy to spend the summer with his mother in Layton, about 25 miles north of Salt Lake City.
Investigators said they obtained photographs and video images of the boy's worsening condition from his mother's cell phone, starting shortly after the boy arrived.
The injuries resulted from the stepfather, Nathanael Sloop, "engaging in a systematic and progressively more violent pattern of abuse toward Ethan," Layton police detectives wrote in interview summaries.

Ethan's biological father, Joe G. Stacy of Tazewell, Va., said police filled him in on details of the slaying Wednesday.
"I can't talk right now," he told The Associated Press. "I just got the horrible news, talking to prosecutors."
A relative said Ethan had no desire to spend the summer with his mother.
"Ethan did not want to go. Ethan did not want to even talk to (his mother) on the phone. She'd call and he'd say, 'I don't want to talk to her,'" Freida Stacy, Joe G. Stacy's stepmother, told the Deseret News of Salt Lake City.
There’s a special place in hell for animals like this. That being said, the rest of his life here on earth should be made a testing ground for the next.
The Virginia judge has blood on his hands. Meanwhile, the stepfather will burn in hell one day, in jail sooner.
I would suggest that the state execute both of these animals. They will kill again if allowed to exist in open society. They will just need the right impetus.
This makes me sick.
The man who did this is a perfect SOB and the boy’s mother is NO better!
And the judge was the enabler.
In effect, the judge issued a death sentence. When a 4 yr old dislikes an adult, there is usually a good reason.
How could that woman go off to her wedding (never mind to whom) while her son was left alone, suffering and in pain?
She is an animal and has total complicity in this.... (Actually-animals do better caring for their own)
It is very disturbing. Did the court ever bother checking the mothers background? Who she was with? Did they know he had a criminal record? Did they care that a 4 yr old wanted nothing to do with her? Did anyone ask the little man why? The court didn’t do it’s job and he was dead in 10 days. Incomprehensible.
It’s a shocking betrayal of an innocent little boy.
He should be locked in a box, 3 meals a day thrown on the floor and have no outside communication till he dies. Just a hole in the deck for him to void, a bank of lights on 24 hours a day and nothing else. No TV, no verbal,written communication, nothing..... and figure he's dead when the food starts piling up.
Killing him is too easy. This is one where I'd just like to have life without parole. Just like Tommy Silverstein but without television/radio/or art supplies... just a box.
The horror that the little guy suffered is what is so awful. I don’t understand how an adult can abuse and terrorize a child. They are evil incarnate.
Mama dearest is often the main reason children dislike their father.
That wasn’t the case here. Young children usually want Mommy. This little guy didn’t.
No criminal history was found for Stephanie Sloop.
Although, I wonder if they ran a background check under her original name, or her recently married name, as was stated in the article.
I also wonder who had custody, as that wasn't stated either, and WHY the judge forced the boy to be transferred to his mother.
