Turkey has installed Anti-Aircraft Hawk Missiles at a village close to the Syrian border in an attempt to prevent Israeli war jets from violating Turkish Airspace in case of an attack against Iran or Syria.
A Turkish paper reported that Turkey will not allow Israel to use its airspace to attack Iran, Syria or any other country, and will act against any such violations.
The anti-aircraft batteries were installed in the village of Kayeel, south of Turkey and located close to the Syrian border.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Turkish military official stated that the batteries are meant to protect Turkey and its airspace against any violations, including American or Israeli war jets should Israel or the United States decide to attack Iran or Syria.

Agreed.
I've said that Bush's worst mistake was not dividing Iraq and Afghanistan along ethnic lines and simply set to them to killing each other.
It would have been especially appropriate in the case of Iraq, as Turkey wouldn't allow us to stage from their territory, and there is nothing Turkey fears more than an independent Kurdistan on their border. It would have been a suitable reward for their "help"...
I was a Hawk Acquisition Radar repairman way back in the 60s. They were a good air defense missile back then. I don’t know how much they’ve been upgraded.
I would presume that we gave these missiles to Turkey back when they were defending NATO’s right flank from a potential attack by the Soviet Union.
Since then, unfortunately, Turkey has gradually switched sides, and now is our potential enemy. Regretable, but they have been going Islamist and cozying up to Iran. Hopefully, Israel also is familiar with the Hawk Missile system and knows how to counter it.
That's the eventual fate of all nations.
That is extra sad as Turkey's military has usually stayed secular (ie out of political decisions). Turkey's military also has ties with Israel.. at least to date.
They just completed (using Israeli expertise and systems) a major upgrade of many of their existing tanks. Israel is one of the major contractors/advisers/tech partners on Turkeys newest tank they are developing and building. So my question would be, are the Hawk missiles a feint (to Israels benefit), or a signal that there is a change in relationship going on between the politicians and the military in Turkey?
One more thing. Turkey is a member of NATO. What are they doing essentially defensively arming against a US ally?
But the Saudi’s might have a problem with it...
See, if the Israeli’s had an Aircraft Carrier, that would change the whole dynamic wouldn’t it??? ;-)
Actually, that is a good question.
He has been trying. He also did not expect the hatred our government shows to Israel. Obama works against everything Israel tries to do.
Turkey is a member of NATO. An Israeli attack on Turkey would give grounds for NATO action against Israel.
true but it needn't be so soon if they would attack Iran and take out their nukes. But I doubt they will
......But the Saudis might have a problem with it......
unless they are flying high cover or have assigned targets
A pretty misleading headline.
It would be a highly belligerent act for Israel to use Turkish airspace en-route to an attack on Iran without Turkish consent, one that would pose the risk of gross domestic political instability (among other things), and Turkey is within its rights to deter that kind of action.
American aircraft on combat missions never overfly non-consenting states, that’s for sure; even combat support missions have some very complicated rules (certain kinds of air missions to Iraq can’t refuel in a number of allied and friendly countries, for example).
If we had an administration that would support the logistical side of a potential raid by Israel, and refuel the A/C involved in that raid, then there probably would be no stopping them from doing it...
I’ll bet a buffalo nickle Obama would blow the whistle on the Israeli’s even if they asked...
What a peach of a guy there...
How high can the jets fly?
How high can the missles go?
Don’t worry folks..
Our current crop of Clown Flag Officers ever eager to dispose of well established, effective amd paid For Weapons Platforms (Perhaps to justify buying new ones to help the MIC? and their golden parachutes)?
Well they provided the Turks with 1000 M60 Series tanks during P. Bush II days..
You know the Tanks used to threaten the American Forces who had No Tanks in Kurdistan because the Turks (our “Allies”) refused to let the US Army pass thru their territory?
Yeah those were American Tanks given to our “Ally”.
W
Sorry... Any bets at least some of the Missles and Command and Control Systems threatening US and Isralie aircraft are of US Origin?
