Indians buying more cars, pushing up gas prices: Obama
Hindustan Times ^ | Washington, May 14, 2010 | Indo-Asian News Service

US President Barack Obama is asking auto-loving Americans to use public transportation more as the fact that Indians and Chinese are buying more cars will push up oil prices.

"Because one of the things, obviously, that we have to recognise is, is that no matter what we do, oil prices are going to be going up over the long term," he said Thursday at a rally in Buffalo, New York.

"I mean, year to year, they may vary. Sometimes it's four bucks a gallon at the pump, sometimes it drops back down to two-and-a-half," he said. "The mass transit system would be good for the environment too."

The new grouse about Indians pushing up gas prices comes after his much publicised rhetoric in May last year when he announced that US companies that outsource jobs from "Buffalo to Bangalore" will lose their tax incentives.

"You're not always clear what's going on, but the long-term trend is just because countries like China - they're starting to buy cars and countries like India are starting to buy cars, and so the demand on petroleum and fossil fuels are going to be greater and greater," Obama said.

"We've got to get a first-class transit system," he told auto-loving Americans, who have 950 cars per thousand people as against 8.5 per thousand for Indians.

"We don't have one right now. We used to be at the top. Now you've got China - they're building multiple high-speed rail lines all across the country, leaving us behind," Obama said. "But it's not just transit. It's our ports, our airports, our sewer systems, our water systems."

"We're going to figure out how do we make those kinds of long-term investments, but do so in a way that doesn't increase our deficit, and that's going to be a challenge, but I think it's going to be a priority," the President said.

Economists might have used "all kinds of fancy formulae and mathematical equations" to declare recession has ended," Obama said. "But if you're still looking for a job out there, it's still a recession. If you can't pay your bills or your mortgage, it's still a recession."

Is this guy really this stupid?

First of all, he says stop buying cars (which is the only way to stop driving cars) and gas prices will go down then says gas prices will go up no matter what we do.

Then he equates 8.5 cars per 1000 to 950 per thousand. I don’t think a few cars will make a difference.

And he wants us to stop buying cars after he’s used tax dollars to buy GM. I wonder how the unions feel about his stupid remarks.

This guy is one great big empty suit.

But, sadly, those who supported him and still support him will only say “He didn’t mean it” or “So?”

Yeah, and somewhere in Timbuktu a butterfly is now beating its wings that will exacerbate the severity of a yet-to-be identified killer tornado on the American midwest!

Never let go of a blown-out-of proportion, manufactured crisis, Rahm!

"Public transportation is useful for only a small segment in a few select areas. By definition it CANNOT serve everyone unless we all live in Soviet-style housing."

Don't give him any ideas...

I assume that India and China will also be hiring BP hence the gas shortage.

Let them take public transportation. They're the ones numbering in the billions.

So in other words it is ok for thoise in other countries to drive cars but here in America we are going to make gas too expensive for all of you by not allowing our own energy production. Does he even know that there is zero public transportation 20 mi outside of most cities?

>too much technology.

My favorite retort to yahoos like that is to say OK, why don’t you stop using 150 year old technology.

Don’t use your crapper. For a week only. See how that works.

Okay, I guess, if you are in China. So how many people are going to use them? Still won't get you anywhere the rails don't go.

Obama said. "But it's not just transit. It's our ports,

(We need a Calcutta), our airports, our sewer systems, (we need a Ganges, too!) our water systems. (a...Ganges!!)"

The tarrif on Chinese-made oilfield tubular goods (think Casing, drill pipe) went into effect this week, effectively doubling the price of such goods.

But Obamam will blame the Indians for any increase in the price of gasoline, even though fewer than nine out of every thousand Indians has a car.

Sure he does. People are far easier to control in cities. You can turn the power, water, heat, sewer lift pumps, etc. on and off...

Hard to mess with people who have a fireplace, an outhouse, and a well...
