Can we all count on Mayor Villaraigosa to boycott California, now? After all, California has had precisely the same law as Arizona's law on the books for years. Section 834b provides:
(a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws.
(b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the following:
(1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status.
(2) Notify the person of his or her apparent status as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws and inform him or her that, apart from any criminal justice proceedings, he or she must either obtain legal status or leave the United States.
(3) Notify the Attorney General of California and the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service of the apparent illegal status and provide any additional information that may be requested by any other public entity.
(c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city, county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly prohibited.

As (fictional) Mayor of my (fictional) city, I have decided that we will no longer enforce rules against video piracy. I hereby declare all copyright laws regarding Hollywood movies to be null and void.
Furthermore, I declare my city to be a sanctuary city - no one need fear arrest.
Anyone who disagrees with this policy is a racist.

Given the economic damage inflicted on us by the current administration and many state governments, most readers of this column would probably be quite happy to live in a state where:
The official unemployment rate in March was 6.6%.
The average unemployment rate in 2009 using the most comprehensive definition was 10.5%, the fourth-lowest in the nation (behind three much smaller states), and far lower than the national average of 16.2%.
The number of people either working or looking for work has actually grown during the past twelve months (in most states, the labor force has contracted significantly).
The economy grew in 2008, and probably did so again in 2009.
Illegals are killing this nation and states economically and will drag us into being a third world country if they aren’t stopped from coming here illegally.

Here is another reality check the lovers of illegals are not telling us.

52 percent of adult Latino immigrants are drop-outs
Immigration Chronicles/Pew Hispanic Center ^ | May 14, 2010

The Pew Hispanic Center released a sobering report this week reminding us about the bleak education outlook for the nation’s largest minority group.
The most worrisome stat? More than half of all foreign-born Latino adults in the U.S. are high school drop-outs. That’s compared with 25 percent of native-born Hispanics.
The implications of this trend are huge for a host of socio-economic reasons. But one of the most significant? It could lead to a more illiterate and ill-equipped workforce that’s precisely what an information and technologically driven economy doesn’t need.
PS from Grampa Dave: I don’t think that the Pew research groups can be called racist conservative tea party pollsters.

Expect an Executive Order from the President any day now, probably within the next two months, amnesty-ing 30 million Illegal Immigrants on the spot with the signing of one document. He would be just the person to do such a thing, and offer them all Federal Protection from the states, particularly if these spreads to other states from Arizona.

The Los Angeles city council has voted to boycott Arizona businesses in one of the strongest moves yet against the state's new immigration law. Council members agreed to bar official travel to Arizona and avoid new city contracts with state firms. Last month, Arizona passed a law requiring police to check the immigration status of people suspected of being in the US illegally. Opponents have rallied against the law, saying it encourages racial profiling. Several cities have enacted resolutions condemning the law and tens of thousands of people across the US have joined protests against it. ....Travel ban: The Los Angeles legislation now goes to the city's mayor, who has pledged to sign it. It could affect up to $8m in city contracts and travel.

One more link....
US Immigration Law Enforcement by Local Agencies
In 2002, the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) issued an extremely important legal opinion explaining that state and local police officers have the inherent authority to arrest illegal aliens and transfer them to federal custody, regardless of whether the aliens have committed criminal or civil violations of immigration law. U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft announced the conclusion of that OLC opinion in June 2002. However, the full opinion was only made available to the public as a result of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. The local arrest authority recognized in this opinion is a critical component of immigration enforcement. Read the full opinion (PDF).
