Gov. Brad Henry today vetoed a bill that would have allowed Oklahomans to opt out of the national health care system and another measure that would have allowed them to wear handguns in public view.
House Joint Resolution 1054 would have prohibited any law or regulation requiring any Oklahoman to have individual insurance coverage. It also would have banned any state resident from being fined for failing to have health insurance.
The measure also would have authorized Senate President Pro Tem Glenn Coffee, R-Oklahoma City, and House Speaker Chris Benge, R-Tulsa, to hire a lawyer to file a lawsuit against Congress, President Barack Obama and the head of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department to prevent the recently passed federal health care legislation from taking effect.
In his veto message, the governor said HJR 1054 would have triggered a futile legal battle and a possible loss of federal health care funding.
Open carry
The governor also vetoed House Bill 3354, the so-called open carry law. The law would have allowed those with permits to carry concealed handguns to display their weapons in public view.
The governor said he listened to safety concerns expressed by law enforcement about the measure.
"We already allow trained and licensed Oklahomans to protect themselves by carrying concealed handguns, and it doesn't make anyone safer to wear a holster and display that weapon to the rest of the public," Henry said. "On the contrary, it makes it more difficult and dangerous for law enforcement officers to try to sort out the good guys and bad guys when they arrive at a crime scene."

Elections have consequences Okies.
Is that a republican governor?
Henry is term limited, so we will probably have a Republican governor after the November elections, as well as larger majorities in both the House and the Senate. We will try again then.
I went to the article to read it all. There is no mention of a possible over-ride of the veto. Wondering if they have the votes to do so??? If you see anything else on this, with more information, please ping me to it.
No. The Republicans have run extremely poor campaigns during the past two gubernatorial elections giving Dimocrat Brad Henry two terms.
It has been painful.
However, at the national level, we have Coburn and Inhofe, and Republicans own both houses in OKC, so we do know how to elect conservatives.
I hope you Oklahomans have learned something from this!
We have Coburn and Inhofe in the U. S. Senate. Who have Iowans elected, my FRiend? Grassley and HARKIN?
;-)
This surprises me—I have been watching OK for a long time, now—and have been impressed with how things are going up there. (I’m married to an Okie, lived in OK for years, and have a daughter and her family living there, now).
This just seems a bit off the wall, because I had it in my mind that OK was a very conservative state at present—that the dim gov was doing a good job.
Looks like I was wrong.........
And our POS Dem Gov actually signed “Shall-Issue”. While yours vetos a pro self defense measure.
The Big Lug did one thing right...
Had had an off day.
Who would understand that better than someone from Iowa, the Midwest Massachusetts?
I know how you feel. Arizona had Nappy for 2 terms too, a comedy of errors. Do you have enough in the house and senate to over ride the veto?
In November it's coming to an end, though. Our next Governor will be one of two conservatives; one an "establishment", very well-connected conservative congresswoman and the other a State Senator from Owasso, a suburb of Tulsa.
It's gonna come down to Oklahoma City, the State Capitol, vs. Tulsa, the population center of the eastern part of the State.
Check back with us in February or so.
For that matter, laws restricting open carry restrict 1A rights. An openly carried weapon says more eloquently than mere words "Don't mess with me!"
Anyone who comes to me and suggests voting for any democrat will not be happy with my answer, of course.
Voting for a democrat is voting against yourself.
The influx of all those NE libs into NC after they screwed up where they came from has now screwed up NC. It won’t be long before NC has tax rates as high as the states they came from.
If you’re a fan of Open Carry; New Mexico has the following in its State Constitution:
Art 2, Sec. 6. [Right to bear arms.]
No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes, but nothing herein shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons. No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms.
Now if only we could get the government-types to recognize that it’s plain English and state laws like the prohibition of guns on campus or courtrooms are in violation thereof... *sigh*
