Actually, I believe it’s our crack INS that enforces this..and never against homeowners to my knowledge. I am not defending the guy. I just think that picking at these nits is counterproductive and silly. Don’t confirm him cause he’s sleazy if you will or for whatever reason but picking on this is silly.

Actually the CBP does enforce I-9 employee requirements in many instances. Here's an excerpt from CBP's website:
About Border Patrol

What are the major activities or duties of a Border Patrol Agent?

...Some of the major activities are farm and ranch check, traffic check, traffic observation, city patrol, transportation check, administrative, intelligence, and anti-smuggling activities.<\p> cbp.gov

This does include checking I-9s and covers areas many miles from the border.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Alan D. Bersin said Thursday he didn’t know he’s required by law to file paperwork verifying that his household employees were authorized to work in the United States.

This is scary!!!!!

There are so many forms that are required that we are all guilty and can be arrested or fined.

Does anyone remember the paper work reduction act of the 80’s? Oh yeah, it created another bureaucracy. Take a look at the forms you fill out, it will tell you how long on average it takes and then add up all the forms........and nobody gets angry about it.

I showed one of my clients a tax form that was one page. paper work reduction act showed 30 hours for record keeping, understandiing the law and filling out the form! NOW THAT IS JOB CREATION!

Bersin told senators that he and his wife tracked the immigration status of a nanny, house cleaners and babysitters "on a piece of paper that was on file in our home."

I may start filing my taxes this way.

I find that MORE annoying. I believe in equal justice under the law. Enforce it, or repeal it. If it is too burdensome for everyone to comply with, maybe it should not be a law.

If you were a Democrat government appointee, you’d get away with it, too.

So you think GM’s record keeping requirement should apply to Ms Householder? I think that’s nuts but YMMV

If Ms Householder does not need to perform GM's recordkeeping requirements, then don't apply the law to her. But don't apply the law to everyone and then selectively enforce it.

I agree that there ought to be an exclusion for household employees.
