LOS ANGELES (JTA) -- President Obama will sign the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act into law, joined by six members and three generations of the slain journalist's family.

The act, named in honor of the Wall Street Journal reporter kidnapped and decapitated by Islamic extremists in Pakistan in 2002, expands the examination of press freedom worldwide in the U.S. State Department’s annual human rights report. It will be signed into law Monday morning.

“Violators of press freedom throughout the world now know that they will be closely watched," Pearl's father, Judea, said before leaving Los Angeles for Washington. "This is something our son Danny fought for all his life.”

Also participating in the White House ceremony will be Pearl's widow, Mariane, and their son, Adam Daniel, who will mark his eighth birthday on May 28; his mother, Ruth; and sisters Michelle and Tamara.

Oh, that will do so much good!

Funny, his she-man SCOTUS nominee doesn’t believe in free speech.

Is this some kind of joke. Laws against murder exist.

Wow, I wonder what the penalty for the violation of the "Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act" will be..... Not publishing the story in the NY or LA Times?

Sounds pretty lame to me.

“Obama to sign press freedom law named after Daniel Pearl”

Act also calls for the secretary of state to name countries where freedom of the press is violated.

From the JPost article (get ready....this is good): “Late last month, the US Senate unanimously passed the act. After the bill was signed, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) said, ‘In many parts of the world, the freedom of the press is the last – or even the only – safeguard against the complete erosion of all other human rights.’

‘The horrific murder of Daniel Pearl that shocked the world also opened our eyes to the abuse and harassment that many journalists face, too often at the hands of government authorities. With this bill, we pay tribute to Daniel’s life and his work by shedding a bright light on this repression, and hope to prevent this sort of tragedy from ever happening again,’ Dodd continued.

‘Freedom of expression cannot exist where journalists are not safe from persecution and attack. Our government must promote freedom of the press by putting on center stage those countries in which journalists are killed, imprisoned, kidnapped, threatened or censored,’ he said.”

The commentary from the politicians implies that Mr. Pearl was killed by government authorities because he was a journalist, rather than by Islamic extremists because he was Jewish.

I hope you'll be closely watching Obama, Mr. Pearl, he has a habit of suppressing free speech, himself.

More smoke and mirrors. IF the O administration were really serious about deaths and dangers to journalists they would raise hell with Mexico, instead of siding with them on everything. More journalists are murdered/kidnapped in Mexico than anywhere in the world.

I'm sure Chavez, Castro, and Hu Jintao are quaking in their boots.

Maybe at the next Academy Award ceremony Richard Gere -- and a billion liberal viewers -- can send out positive thoughts in support of the bill.

Forgive us, but we must ask -- crass though it may be: is there any country where slicing somebody's head off is not already a crime of a somewhat more serious nature than failing to acknowledge his press card?

Well... If it makes millions of Lefties fell good about themselves, that's the main thing. For me: one American GI in some dusty backwater is almost certainly doing something right this minute that means more to Pearl's legacy than all of them put together.

There’s no indication that Zero cares in the slightest about murders of Americans or about a free press. I suspect this performance has to do with soliciting a few more Jewish votes for the left in 2010.

Oh, sorry! I was going to have my son install a global-search-and-replace macro, but he’s in the shower. They’ll probably have changed the acceptable phrase by the time he’s finished, what with how long he can spend in the shower ...

Does this new-found proclamation for "Freedom of the press" include freedom for the press that the Obama White House doesn't like?

Will she start with the current Administration/State Run Media in the U.S.A.?
