New AZ law: Firms have no legal duty to have translators

PHOENIX - A Glendale optometrist's yearlong legal fight over what services he had to provide for a Spanish-speaking customer has translated into new protections for other businesses.

Gov. Jan Brewer has signed legislation affirming that nothing in state law requires businesses to provide "trained and competent" interpreters when a customer comes in speaking a language other than English.

Assistant Attorney General Michael Walker said that has probably always been the law. But that didn't save John Schrolucke from having to spend time and money defending himself and his practice before Walker's office finally dismissed the case.

I wonder if she was a “green card” holder, illegal immigrant, or citizen. Did I miss that? If she’s an illegal, are we paying for her treatment? Is she fraudulently obtaining benefits?

Instead, he said, the woman filed a discrimination complaint with the Attorney General's Office.

No doubt, the local La Raza organization walked her through this process.

I wonder if the AG complaint form is in Spanish too.

If she’s fraudulently obtaining benefits, the ATTORNEY GENERAL NEEDS TO CHARGE HER.

In MA, a dentist has to pay for the translator of the patients choice. It turned into a scam.

I haven’t kept up with Gov. Christy. What’s he doing lately to get on the good side of conservatives? Has he outlawed the smell coming from Newark?

Everyone going through the legal immigration process must be able to pass an interview in English.

The only ones that should be here legally that can not speak English would be tourists on a proper visa.

Do they let just anyone file a lawsuit?

Or, will AZ move to ‘English only’ voting ballots?

How about having English as the official language of all states.

FL has a constitutional amendment which does this.

language unifies a nation. multiple languages balkanize.

The only company that would demand balkanization are the free spanish language stations. Those should just be “pay extra” cable tv stations.

Jack,

I think the big thing is he is taking on the Public Unions, and lowering spending rather then just cutting taxes. U-tube has some fun snippets from speeches.

a common language makes a society and a country successful

but, you’re assuming that they want their society, culture and country to be successful...

and that’s not a valid assumption.
