Life looks a little rosier after 50, a new study finds. Older people in their mid- to late-50s are generally happier, and experience less stress and worry than young adults in their 20s, the researchers say.
The results, based on a Gallup phone survey from 2008 of more than 340,000 Americans, held even after the researchers accounted for factors that could have contributed to differences in well-being with age, such as whether the participants were married, had children at home or were employed.
So if having a partner and getting rid of the kids aren't responsible for the uptick in happiness and general life satisfaction with age, then what is? More studies will be needed to find out, the researchers say.
"That can be based on social things, on societal things, on biological things; and for us that is the big question," study researcher Arthur Stone, a psychologist at Stony Brook University in N.Y.
Two ways to look at life
The findings agree with previous work showing well-being varies with age. And some studies have narrowed things down to suggest that happiness comes with being old, male and Republican.

Well. I didn't see that coming!
Getting closer to leaving this world and going home.
Well, if the converse holds, it explains why all the 20-somethings I meet are complete @ssholes.

Moving forward, this will no longer be true. EVERYONE will be less happy.. Younger folks will be paying through the nose for everything.. nationalized health care and higher taxes on everything due to national debt. Older folks will have to work through their senior years to make ends meet (that is if they don’t DIE QUICKLY because of rationed health care. The days of the FAT PIGGY BANK and 6-digit pensions and 401K’s are OVER.
Experience teaches us that 99.9% of the things we worry about never happen, and we never see the real disasters coming. Moral: worry and anxiety are pointless.
happiness comes with being old, male and Republican.
You bet!...You’ve paid your dues. You can tell everybody to go to hell and not feel guilty anymore!
I think the same can be said for females.
Trade offs. I’m much more stable, and in my opinion, a better person than when I was younger. However, I’ve lost a bit in terms of energy and drive.
I think a competitive, energetic, driven individual will not be happy. They aren’t satisfied, not content. A driven person can, at times, be objectionable to be around. But, they achieve.
That’s why a company needs both older and younger employees, if they can do it.
All of this seems logical to me. Why there is research about this, well, that’s just stealing.
“happiness comes with being old, male and Republican.”....
I’ll drink to that!....
Of course!...goes without saying!
Republicans are happier by definition. Liberals are miserable all the time....
This thought the secret to happiness in old age was having all your enemies die before you do..........
True
Happiness comes with age because we finally see an end to the road and are wise enough to know this planet is a screwed up mess and mostly misery ... but hey, I’m just saying ...
