'Humiliation and intimidation' of Palestinians behind decision to scrap Caesarea concerts, British singer says.

British singer-songwriter Elvis Costello this week became the latest in a list of stars to cancel performances in Israel as a political protest.

Costello, who was due to play two shows in Caesarea on June 30 and 31, posted a message on his website in which he announced that he would scrap the concerts in protest at what he termed the intimidation and humiliation of Palestinians by Israel.

I've long enjoyed DK and her "Live in Paris" cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is THE definitive version - just amazing!

Mr. Krall is just another anti-semite "arteest".

Always amusing to hear HAS BEEN cancel their show in Israel. It is their only option to get a little bit of notice again.

PS.I thought Costello was dead.

Why didn’t he just move his venue to some Palestinian concert halls? That way he could combine his devastating blow to the Israelis with some support for all his Palestinian fans?

Not everyone feels compelled to beat their audiences over the head with their politics.

Thats something I can appreciate from anyone not in politics.

He wrote some good songs once upon a time, but so did his brother-in-arms, Mr. Yusuf “Cat Stevens” Islam. Maybe “Elvis” should change his name again: Muhammed Costello has a nice ring to it.

Shmuck.

If he was ever relevant, he stopped being so about 20 years ago. No one cares, MacManus.

” Mr. Krall is just another anti-semite “arteest”. “

If I worried about the politics concerning every artist that made sounds, I’d deprive myself of a lot of enjoyment of life.

Also from Costello:

” Costello’s standing in the U.S. was bruised for a time when in March 1979, during a drunken argument with Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlett in a Columbus, Ohio Holiday Inn hotel bar, the singer referred to James Brown as a “jive-ass nigger”, then upped the ante by pronouncing Ray Charles a “blind, ignorant, nigger”. “

Elvis? His name is Declan Patrick MacManus.

I thought he might be related to Frank Costello.

If Israel is so bad, why did he schedule his concerts there in the first place? I can think of only 2 reasons: The first is that this is an attempt by a has-been performer to get back in the news. The second is simply that he succumbed to politically correct pressures encouraging him to malign Israel.

Of course. He wrote some fabulous songs. And if he is no longer a pop star or making tons of money from his recordings and live shows (and he still makes enough), I would hardly hold that lack of commercialism against him. I also don’t mind that he outgrew his punk moment. I sure did. New Wave was always an industry confection and marketing scheme - a way to collect and categorize and sell music.

His most recent project is the Sugarcanes, doing American folky, bluegrass, rootsy music.

Before that he was exploring New Orleans R&B with Allen Toussaint.

Bottm line is, as usual, I wish entertainers I like would just keep their traps shut on politics. But they don’t. But that doesn’t make me like the music any less.

Too bad. He is one of my very favorite musical performers and I’ve seen him play several times over the past thirty years. He is one of those “shut up and sing” artists that I want to hear nothing from that isn’t on one of his records. Same for his wife, Diana Krall, if it ain’t part of the song, I have no use for it.
