"In the text, the resolution "acknowledges years of official depredations, ill-conceived policies and the breaking of covenants" by the U.S. government toward tribes and "apologizes on behalf of the people of the United States to all Native Peoples for many instances of violence, maltreatment and neglect inflicted on" American Indians by U.S. citizens."

He is apologizing on my behalf. Fine if he wants to apologize on behalf of the Feds but not for me.

I don't believe it is a sign of maturity but just the opposite. Apologies delivered due to political correctness are are given because of pressure and/or emotions, not logic and reason

Our family Bible has births and deaths recorded in the blank section in the back. Has been since the 1600s. There’s one entry that reads: James, Sarah and 3 young daughters murdered by Chickasaws.
I’m not apologizing to any spawn of murderers.

Sort of like the clash of cultures of Islamism and Western culture?

So it was you that did it?

Now we, represented by Senator Brownback, are responsible for what is happening to the Indians now. But do I think that will stop the government, no because they have apologized. I sure hope the indians feel better.

Why are we still apologizing? How many times do people have to apologize for past wrongs? These people are implacable.

Do we think for a minute the indians, if they would have won, would apologize to us? HAve they ever apologized for massacres they’ve caused? Have they ever apologized to the other tribes they constantly were fighting and killing brutally? Do they have to keep apologizing again and again?

I am so sick of this sh1t.

“We”? You mean the Spanish conquistadors? Maybe you have something there. Spain needs to apologize for their role in killing and conquering Indians.

“He is apologizing on my behalf. Fine if he wants to apologize on behalf of the Feds but not for me.”

The Congress can do that in our behalf. If enough people get mad, elect others and take back the apology. What gave us the right /do you think it was right to take them and forcibly put them in reservations????

“So it was you that did it?”

No it wasn’t but he is apologizing for what done by the state on in the name of the state. We enjoy the benefits of the state actions and we suffer for the mistakes.

When will the Indian tribes apologize for the many atrocities they perpetrated? Read some Allan W. Eckert books. They are very historically accurate and very entertaining.

Oh for god sake! if things hadn’t gone down exactly as they did we wouldn’t have the USA and so many people around the world would be SOL!!

I for one think that everything happened exactly as it was supposed to. I can assure you that my indian husband is perfectly happy that his family was “civilized” by the “white man”.

They would still be living a primitive life had the Europeans not come to America. They were stone-age people. They didn’t even have metal prior to it’s introduction from outside. They didn’t have horses. They were introduced by the Spanish. They made tools and weapons from rock and had to walk to get anywhere.

I was not referring to modern day native Americans who live in stucco houses, drive Ford F250’s, and enjoy their 54” LCD TVs.

I wasn’t referring to modern ones either. The Cherokees never lived in tepees or were nomadic for instance.

Kind of hard to blame the indians for not having horses which had to be brought over here.

I’m not saying they were anywhere as advanced as the Europeans, but that especially the tribes that got the apology weren’t exactly what you described them as. Advanced or not a lot of tribes had a pretty good setup before Europeans arrived. Would I prefer it? No, but I just don’t think it is correct to say they were in horrible shape before contact.

I still contend that the stronger culture survived and thrived. What good are apoloigies at this point?
