Calderon blames U.S. guns for violence
Washington Times ^ | May 21, 2010 | Kara Rowland

Mexican President Felipe Calderon called on Congress on Thursday to reinstate a federal ban on assault weapons that he said are ending up in the hands of violent drug cartels south of the border, using a highly contentious estimate of U.S. guns seized in Mexico when addressing Capitol Hill lawmakers.

Mr. Calderone said he respects the Second Amendment, but argued that violence south of the border spiked in 2004 after the expiration of a U.S. ban on semiautomatic weapons. Echoing statements made by President Obama Wednesday, Mr...

"With all due respect, if you do not regulate the sale of these weapons in the right way, nothing guarantees that criminals here in the United States with access to the same power of weapons will not decide to challenge American authorities and civilians," he said.

Mr. Calderon told a joint session of Congress that of the 75,000 guns seized by Mexican authorities over the last three years, 80 percent are traced to the U.S.

That assertion is suspect as gun-rights advocates and several media outlets have debunked similar figures in the past. Indeed, Mr. Calderon's comments drew a harsh rebuke from the National Rifle Association on Thursday.

"The answer to Mexico's drug and violence problem does not lie in dismantling the Second Amendment; it lies in making sure that the Mexican government takes care of problems on their side of the border," NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said. "With all due respect to the president, he's either intentionally using false data, or he's unknowingly using bad numbers."

Mr. Arulanandam pointed to congressional testimony given in March 2009 by an official with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who said there is no factual basis for the claim that as many as 90 percent of the weapons come from the U.S...

With all undue disrespect is more like it. Felipe Calderon comes to Congress and issues serial insults to serial applause by the rats therein. Obama issues serial insults to our allies and apologies to our adversaries.

You know, Mexico has gun control. Is it *gasp* not working?

Yeah I’m sure it’s guns and not a corrupt, weak government down there....

If Mexico had a less corrupt and restricted form of government, its people would have fewer reasons to turn to crime.

Where do I go to get a full auto machine gun and grenades?

What gun store is that?

I bet most of their guns came from the Mexican or Venezuelan Army

We’ll get on that right after we stop the flow of cartel drugs across our border.

It has NOTHING to do with drugs. NOTHING.

It has NOTHING to do with a corrupt government. NOTHING.

It has NOTHING to do with a corrupt military. NOTHING.

American semiautomatics are the reason for machine-gun attacks. Obviously.

American semiautomatics are the reason for grenade attacks. Obviously.

American semiautomatics are the reason for machete attacks. Obviously.

I’ve been such a fool all these years.

Blame US guns for Mexican violence? Nonsense! If there’s a non-human cause it’s gotta be those infernal jumping beans.

I’m considering selling off part of my assault weapon collection. I believe I’ll do it at an Arizona gun show when the time comes. FU Calderon and your entire country.

Has Calderon ever given thought that it is not the guns, but rather, Mexicans who are killing people and causing the violence?

What TOTAL bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The “assault weapons” made before the 94 gun ban, they didn’t go anywhere. They were still here, and people used them.

ON top of that, the weapons made AFTER the ban weren’t much different than ‘preban’ rifles. The ban included rifles with flash hiders, detachable magazines, and a pistol grip...among other “features”. More than two of the three of those features would make it illegal. In other words, lose the flash suppressor, and it wouldn’t be designated as an “assault weapon”. Is he saying flash suppressors are making his country a more dangerous place?

He acts like with the ban going away, suddenly there were a bunch of weapons flowing into Mexico, as if the ban made a difference! (ROFL)

This idiot is coming here, insulting our country, and peddling LIES! The weapons sold before, during, and after the “assault” weapons ban aren’t functionally much different. It’s all cosmetics.

I SERIOUSLY doubt any Mexican cartel member, or whomever the hell is violent down there, would have ANY use for a street legal American semi auto rifle sold out of a gun shop. You can be CERTAIN those guys are importing military weapons, or procuring them from corrupt Mexican military personnel.

This guy is SO full of excrement, there’s probably an awful smell wherever he speaks!

Just try to take my guns, Federal, State, or local government.

The time for talking has passed. Action will be required to settle the issue of constitutional freedom once and for all, IMO.

I am ready. Bring it.

there is no factual basis for the claim that as many as 90 percent of the weapons come from the U.S

Actually is the absolute truth. Absolutely misleading but absolutely true. 90% of the so-called assault weapons can be traced back to the US. In fact, they can all be traced back to one US city. Hartford, CT. The fact is that most of those weapons were Colt AR15s/M16s provided to the Mexican Armed Forces and Law Enforcement that subsequently found their way into the hands of the bad guys. The Zetas take many with them when they desert. So it is true that they come from the US very misleading since it is Mexican corruption that actually provided them.
