Martinez One To Put N.M.'s House in Order (NM-R Gov. primary ABQ Journal endoresement
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | May 23, 2010 | Journal editorial staff

Posted on 05/23/2010 5:03:36 PM PDT by CedarDave

When Susana Martinez turned 18, she became a fully armed security guard, a job that can provide a look at the worst side of human behavior. Eighteen years later, she was elected top prosecutor for New Mexico's 3rd Judicial District based in Las Cruces, a job that guarantees quality face time with that behavior. And she has spent the last 13-plus years in that job ensuring that bad behavior meets serious consequences.

And New Mexico is better for it.

Circa 2010, as Republican voters go to the polls to select a nominee for governor in the wake of interminable state government scandals, criminal investigations, indictments and prison sentences, it's Martinez's record that stands out.

That record includes serving as the top executive of a high-profile, public agency that is held accountable by voters. Martinez has delivered — and been re-elected to the job four times for her hard work. And she was elected as a Republican in a heavily Democratic district, which should be an important factor for Republicans concerned with their candidate's electability in November. ...

Because Martinez has made it clear she understands New Mexico's officials have to work within the state's budget and its laws. That they work for the people. That when it comes to New Mexicans' lack of faith in their leaders, we have to "make the processes in Santa Fe more public" and "we can't change it unless we change the government."

~~snip~~

"What I bring to the table as a professional and my proven record should speak volumes," she says.

They do. The Journal endorses Susana Martinez in the GOP primary June 1.

As I posted last night, Martinez represents the best chance Republicans have to win the governor's office. She is a conservative Republican Hispanic woman in a state where Hispanics and native-Americans are in the majority. If she wins, she will face the current Lt. Governor, also a woman who is tied to the corrupt Richardson administration. And for what its worth, Sarah Palin visited ABQ last Sunday to offer her endorsement.

According to Rasmussen, Martinez will be destroyed by Denish. She is being pushed by local media (just like Juan McCain was) because they know their gal will beat her like a pinata.

The candidate with the best shot at beating Denish according to Rasmussen is Doug Turner.

Absurd. Turner is at 6% in the polls.

Readers vote Susana Martinez has best chance to take Denish down

(Alamogordo area newspaper poll. Can't post anything but the link -- USA Today owned newspaper -- but she won the poll with nearly 50%, Weh had 26%, Domenici 18% and Turner 5%.)

I like Doug, but he has no money and won’t win the primary.

Martinez is the best choice that has a chance.

I would love to see her win, but caution is in order using that poll as a reference. Alamogordo is home of Holloman AFB, where they hid the stealth fighters forever. Military town, through and through. Not like Northern NM.

I lived in Western NM for 14 years, and know the state. Was also Republican County Chairman in Grant County for a couple of years. Living in a mine union town was a real education for an old West Texas farm boy.

Doug is the only guy who can beat Denish.

Doug is the only guy who can beat Denish.

You keep saying that but provide no information to base it on. Show me some reasons.

And, BTW, I'm still waiting for the link to that Rasmussen poll.

I agree the poll was in a small town paper and just over the Organ Mountains from Las Cruces. I’m not saying Martinez will have an easy time of it with Denish. Just show me someone who has a better chance and give reasons why.

BTW, here in the oil patch, there seems to be a Weh sign on every corner. A few more for Martinez have cropped up in the past week together with some for Domenici. Turner signs? Seen one or two at the most.

And, BTW, I'm still waiting for the link to that Rasmussen poll.

Never mind. I found it and its from late March, almost two months ago:

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish leads each of five possible Republican opponents by anywhere from 10 to 22 points in the first Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 telephone survey of the New Mexico gubernatorial race.

Denish tops 50% support in three of the match-ups. She leads State Representative Janice Arnold-Jones 52% to 30%, county District Attorney Susana Martinez 51% to 32%, and lawyer Pete Domenici Jr. 52% to 35%.

Denish’s closest competitors for now are political consultant Doug Turner, whom she leads 43% to 34%, and former Republican Party state chairman Allen Weh, whom she posts a 45% to 35% winning margin against.

~~snip~~

Domenici, the son of a longtime U.S. senator, is viewed very favorably by 10% and very unfavorably by 16%.

For Arnold-Jones, very favorables are five percent (5%) and very unfavorables 12%.

Eight percent (8%) have a very favorable view of Turner, and 12% view him very unfavorably. Martinez is regarded very favorably by 10% and very unfavorably by the same number (10%).

Fourteen percent (14%) have a very favorable opinion of Weh, with 12% who see him very unfavorably.

At this stage of the campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the very favorable and very unfavorable figures more significant than the overall favorability totals.

the poll was in a small town paper

I do not discount "small town" newspapers. They can be much more accurate than the daily newspapers owned by a holding company.
