Britain bans doctor who linked autism to vaccine

LONDON (AP) - Britain's top medical group on Monday banned a doctor whose research suggesting a link between a common vaccine and autism caused millions of parents worldwide to abandon the shot for measles, mumps and rubella.

Dr. Andrew Wakefield was the first to publish peer-reviewed research suggesting such a connection, even though the study was later widely discredited. The ruling by Britain's General Medical Council found him guilty of serious professional misconduct.

Wakefield, 53, then moved to the U.S. and set up an autism center in Texas, where he has a wide following, but faces similar skepticism from the medical community. The ruling in Britain only applies to his right to practice medicine in the U.K., not in other countries.

“many children dying”

from mumps? from measles? from rubella?

had ‘em all. they’re nothing.

You're being serious?

Thousands of children die from the measles every year. They are mostly in poor countries where the disease is more likely to result in encephalitis and pneumonia. Many of these poor kids die from the diarrhea and dehydration measles causes.

Rubella can cause serious damage or death to unborn children if the mother contracts it in early pregnancy.

Death do to mumps is rare but it can lead to encephalitis and meningitis. Before the MMR vaccine, thousands of kids went deaf from mumps.

Ever see a kid suffering from whooping cough? We vaccinate against that too and it ain't nothing.

Was this the guy who turned out to be a flat-out fraud? If so, he ought to be banned from any self-respecting professional organization.

The establishment may be in error and the lone genius who everyone called the kook maybe correct.

Maybe, but I wouldn't bet on it.

But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

exactly. I might want to add that in the past, people with autism might have been diagnosed as either just retarded in the case of low functioning autistics or mentally ill in the case of the higher functioning ones.

People who have kids diagnosed with autism get better support and services than people with just mentally retarded children. This leads some people to really push for that autism diagnosis

See post 15.

I read the articles linked to in post 15. I don't see the connection between them and the fact that this guy based his entire study on 12 children and was being paid by the lawyer who wanted to sue the vaccine manufacturers.

But it's big pharma pushing vaccines. I wish there was a more honest flow of info but there isn't. We have lost honest science to the money monster.

I believe in vaccines. I think that they work. But I think that safety is sacrificed on the altar of mass production and the use of unsafe adjuvants.

I agree with you about the Hep B too.

a disease that 99% of babies in the US will not be exposed to

Most people are not exposed to these diseases because widespread vaccination inhibits the spread of the diseases in the first place.

Oh, and using the "CAPS LOCK" key doesn't make your arguments sound more convincing -- actually, it works the other way around.

Why would you intentionally ignore the many other references? I know why you do, but are you honest enough to admit it?

You have no legitimate evidence showing vaccines cause autism. It is a fact that thimerosal hasn't been used since 2001 and there has been no corresponding decline in autism rates since that time. How do you explain that? You can't, but you want to believe vaccines are responsible in the worst way so you ignore all the evidence to the contrary. These are not the actions of a rational person.

I had whooping cough when I was 4 and got german measles that year too. I did think having to wear the sunglasses was cool. ;-)

Luddites and chemicalphobes will believe whatever they want to believe regardless of how much information they are presented with.

My all-time favorites are the anti-genetic-engineering protester holding a sign reading "NO DNA IN OUR FOOD!" and the anti-nuclear-power protester holding a sign reading "JUST SAY NO TO ATOMS!"

There is a nuanced argument to made against the cozy relationship between drug companies and government and the financial incentives to push vaccines. But that nuance get blown away when the claims are vaccines cause autism. There is no evidence to support that, but people use it to justify not vaccinating their children. The problem there is that it doesn’t just put those kids at risk, it puts everyone at risk because vaccines are only really effective when everyone is vaccinated.

My actual beef isn't with the vaccines themselves. The info in post 15 stated that it was mass production that tainted the vaccine. I also have serious concerns with some adjuvants that have been used.

Are you an MD?

The Apollo Program was a government project. Are you one of those people who believes that the moon landings were faked?

No, you are incorrect. The mercury was still allowed in the existing vaccines on shelves and then sneaky government started mandating flu shots, etc. for babies and pregnant women which still had mercury in it as they were supposedly taking mercury out of the “new” MMR vaccinations.

I am sure pharmaceutical companies have no influence on government decisions....none whatsoever.

Increase the number of mandated shots (which include mercury containing ones...so sneaky!) That will really skew results in tests and fool the masses, huh?

In the Autistic children that nurses and physicians had in their own families, when tested they had way over toxic accumulation in their brains of heavy metal such as aluminum and mercury, so what in the world could cause that? Tuna fish? Do you think heavy metals in the brain “may” cause Autism.

Autism mimics mercury poisoning. If you studied mercury poisoning cases you could classify those poisoned as being Autistic. Look at graphs comparing the two. Same.

Also, look on youtube to what a tiny drop of mercury does to neuron devopment in the brain....very scary!!!!! They have been stupid enough to put that stuff intentionally into an infant?????? That is insane!!

Also, for some reason mercury damages MALE brains (hormone difference) to a greater degree than female brains....same result in Autism rates which hits boys at greater rate than girls.

This should be debated NOT HIDDEN. Science is about debate, not destroying people that disagree with government wanted results.

Funny thing is that as they reduce the mercury in vaccine they increase the aluminum, which may be more insidious (if you could even imagine that) than mercury.

We all know how aluminum is so healthy for developing brains, huh, and they are intentionally putting these toxins into the tiny bodies which have little defense against such destructive elements. Disgusting and insane.

Don’t get me wrong though. I am a big fan of Louis Pasteur.

heavy metal such as aluminum

Aluminum is one of the lightest metals in existence.

How do you expect anyone to take you seriously when you clearly don't know the most basic aspects of science?

I understand that. But I'm cautious when it comes to this stuff. Government pushed flu vaccines and wrung their hands and howled we were all gonna die.

At any rate, something is causing autism. My D-i-L works with autistic kids. There are some classed as autistic that simply have lousy parents and the kids have behaviour problems. But some of these kids are truly trapped inside themselves.

Those are classics. You'll find the same attitude here on occasion. The most common is folks not wanting "chemicals" in their food. The anti-GMO crowd doesn't realize that 98% of the food they consume today has been genetically modified in some way.

Most of 'em never bothered to take (and pass) a course in chemistry or nutrition. But they did well in Diversity Studies, UFO's in American Society, Family and Social Roles on Television and Learning from YouTube (all real courses).
