In the case of food stamps, it has become easier to qualify for them. As I noted in March of last year, a Warren County, Ohio, couple was able to qualify for benefits even though they had $80,000 in the bank, a paid-off $300,000 home, and two fairly up-to-date vehicles (one a Mercedes). Matt Hurley at Weapons of Mass Discussion, the blogger who originally exposed this situation, also received additional emails (from people) who provided two other (similar) case stories.
You can even be a college kid with rich parents and qualify for food stamps, as long as you strike an impoverished pose....

Its a corrupt system, very far from the claimed ideals of serving the poor.
If someone were flying over your city, dropping $100 bills from a helicoptor to “help the poor” - would you step outside to see if you could grab a few?
I would like to see boxes of rice and beans, powedered milk and cheese made available to poor people every two weeks.
I don't want them to have anything like money, and I don't want them to have any sort of groceries that they can sell for cigarettes or booze or worse.
Productive people earn paychecks. Unproductive people should be given rice and beans.
I attended a private university and I remember several students who lived off campus received food stamps.
20% of Oregonians get Foodstamps.
THe Government used to do this, up to around 1965 or so!
It's harder now to spot the foodstampers since they went to the debit cards, but when you see a person with a pile of frozen dinners, etc. and a second pile wilf dog food and beer it's a preety good indication that we're paying for the food, and the deadbeat is subsidizing their luxury purchases with money saved from the taxpayer funding of their basic necessities. Personally I think anyone who is found to have a pet, smoke or play the lotto should be forever banned from food stamps.
What is stunning is to go to Ohio’s website for SNAP(foodstamps)
No wonder the couple in the article get food sampsd even with all those assets. Ohio does not look at your assets in deternmining qualification.
Compare that to other states, like Texas that looks at your checking savings house cars etc.
This is sick and it is just as sick to encourage college kids to get food stamps even though their parents can afford to pay for their food.
Damn we are screwed with this Big gov’t must take care of us mentality
Stop the food stamp program and go back to soup lines and then maybe some would realize just how many are feeding off the public trough.
I do. No one is being forced to be lazy. Hunger may provide the incentive. If it dosen't, let natural selection take its course.
beans only no rice or powered cheese...cheese?
I agree with that. In addition, I would give people a choice: you can retain the right to vote over the next 12 months, or you can collect foodstamps today. You can't do both. It's a big choice: think about it.
My first guess was Auntie Zeituni.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it Dubya who gave them that "credit card looking thingy" so they wouldn't be embarrassed at the check out counter?
Sure wouldn't want them to 'suffer' at the looks from working folks....
AMEN! We’ve come a long way from the “No work, no eat” message of the New Testament.
Just more people ripping off the government. Why should this be upsetting to people? Did they think people weren’t ripping off the government?
And you -- you take this opportunity to bash Bush?????
LMAO! How apropos!
My 27 year old brother proudly proclaimed to the family the other day that he’s on food stamps. He was so proud to be able to “provide” for himself and his friends, and in exchange for buying food, they can buy him things, sort of like a barter/exchange.
In the meantime, there’s not a damn thing wrong with him, he’s been unemployed for over 5 years and lives with my mother. I’m simply floored at the youngin’s these days. They really just don’t get the value of hard work anymore.
And to boot, this is the biggest insult to my mother who, at one point in our youth, worked 3 jobs to keep a roof over our heads and food on the plate as a single mother. She drilled hard work and discipline into our heads, but apparently my brother just didn’t get the lesson.
Whereas we “rightists” see everything in terms of tradeoffs (ie, reality based vision),
the left sees things in terms of “solutions” where there are no tradeoffs.
This leads them to prefer a system where EVERYONE who needs to be covered is covered, regardless of how many are defrauding the system.
Our complaints about abuse, therefore, fall on deaf ears.
