Been working every day since I was 9 years old.
59 now and just got laid off.
I will unashamedly do the unemployment and food stamps for awhile.
I remember other students boasting about qualifying for food stamps and all sorts of assistance when I was in college, too. It irked me because I’d scrimped and saved, took community college courses for two years before transferring the credits to a university, and sometimes couldn’t fit all of the classes into my work schedule. Yet, I paid full tuition because I’d worked and saved money.
You’re almost punished for working and saving money. (I don’t blame those students, btw. I blame the policy-makers.)
Yeah, I hear ya. For the record I did MUCH better in college when I had to work - forced me to organize my time better. And if the only reason you’re not working is because you’re going to school, then your room and board needs to be part of your financial plan, grants, scholarships, whatever. The general public shouldn’t have to shoulder it. In other words, there should be an exclusion for college students.
So did I! I put no effort at all into high school. Once I decided to go to college, and I had to pay for it on my own, I made sure to get my money's worth. ;-)
