In the case of food stamps, it has become easier to qualify for them. As I noted in March of last year, a Warren County, Ohio, couple was able to qualify for benefits even though they had $80,000 in the bank, a paid-off $300,000 home, and two fairly up-to-date vehicles (one a Mercedes). Matt Hurley at Weapons of Mass Discussion, the blogger who originally exposed this situation, also received additional emails (from people) who provided two other (similar) case stories.
You can even be a college kid with rich parents and qualify for food stamps, as long as you strike an impoverished pose....

no acrylic nails or huge elaborate “hair dids” either.
And the cell phones! All 3 waiting in line for assistance.
That all costs $$$$... maybe buy food instead of treating yourself.
I agree. I work my ass off and all I can afford are rice and beans. Maybe if I could get some for free I could once in a while get me a nice steak like people on food stamps do.
It is 40 million people - not households (1/8th of the population). Still an astonding number.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t it Dubya who gave them that “credit card looking thingy” so they wouldn’t be embarrassed at the check out counter?
Those EBT Debit Cards were around before GWB. I think those things began when his father was President.
The main reason for the debit cards was to reduce fraud from the old food stamps....which some business and individuals were making a fortune off of....for example....giving food stamp recipients 50 cents cash for every one dollar of food stamp.
The new system has had its share of fraud....but a lot less than the old stamp issuing system
I know. My #56 corrected that, but as you also mentioned, it is still 16 million out of 80 million households on food stamps. That is horrible. “Only in America do the poor drive themselves to the poor house.”
The cards are also cheaper to administer. The company I worked for at the time built the system for Arizona and it was a significant money saver. It saves little in fraud any more as people buy food with it then sell it anyway.
Totally agree. And in the final analysis, WE are the compassionate ones. The progressivists will be KILLING the unproductive one day, as soon as their ends are reached.
I don’t see why not. You have little to no income. Ever hear of “starving students?” That was when I discovered Ramen. Now I don’t eat them because they are too fattening, but back in the day I liked them because they were such a great source of calories.
If the student is being claimed on their parents 1040, no food aid. If not, I don’t see why not.
Yeah, I have relatives that one will go to the store with the other, the one with the money will buy cigs for the one with the food stamps, then the one with the food stamps will buy groceries to cover the cigs. How are they every going to get caught?
Then, at the first red light they rear end the car in front because they were text messaging!
They are the new leisure class. They don't need their manual dexterity anymore. We could solve a lot of their problems by removing their opposable thumbs, so they are like pets. It's not easy to open a bag of Doritos without an opposable thumb.
They won't - more's the pity.
Libertarian ping
They will never willingly give up any form of government assistance because they view it as a right, not as a stopgap measure to help until they're able to work. They have better things to do with their time than working - like watching TV, getting drunk and high, getting another pit bull, getting bred so as to get a bigger welfare check. Nothing in their horizon looks like "working for a living."
You don’t have to tell me, FRiend! I take no offense to your assessment, because you’re absolutely correct.
Saw this article the other day, and frankly some of the comments on this thread disgust me.
Attack the fraud and abuse inherent in this system - get illegals and other criminals off the roles - I’m all for that! However, before cutting off benefits like food stamps and such there needs to be a change in the way private charities work, and within communities. Not all people receiving food stamps are rich fat indulgent moochers with no sense of dignity and full of a sense of entitlement!
Some of the suggestions and assumptions by people posting on this thread make me sick — just about as sick as those who commit fraud in order to receive government help. This attitude is why so many consider conservatives callous, frankly...
Especially in today’s economy more people than ever are finding it necessary to avail themselves of the only system available at this time.
My final opinion — crack down on the fraud, waste and abuse and if that is REALLY done effectively this will NOT be such a burden on the taxpayers (getting illegal aliens off the dole alone would probably cut the costs of this program by a HUGE margin). Then work towards creating or boosting the ability of local, private charities to help those who are really in need (the elderly, the disabled, the TEMPORARILY “displaced” or otherwise “in need”).
