Chris Christie to teacher: If you don’t like my education budget, find a new job

But borough teacher Rita Wilson, a Kearny resident, argued that if she were paid $3 an hour for the 30 children in her class, she’d be earning $83,000, and she makes nothing near that.

“You’re getting more than that if you include the cost of your benefits,” Christie interrupted.

When Wilson, who has a master’s degree, said she was not being compensated for her education and experience, Christie said:

“Well, you know then that you don’t have to do it.” Some in the audience applauded…

“Your union said that is the greatest assault on public education in the history of the state,” Christie said. “That’s why the union has no credibility, stupid statements like that.”

I get that impression as well. I have to say, when I saw that video of him smacking down that reporter, I was all by myself, and I felt like jumping to my feet and yelling "YES!"

I emailed this to all my associates:

MUST WATCH: Gov. Christie Destroys 'Thin-Skinned' Reporter | The FOX Nation

(or cut and paste this URL):
http://www.thefoxnation.co m/gov-chris-christie/2010/05/13/must-watch-gov-christie-destroys-thin-skin ned-reporter

If you are someone who feels that most politicians do not represent your views, you MUST watch this video a the link!

If you are someone who feels that there are no politicians with enough backbone to save our country from this impending mess, you MUST watch this video at the link!

If you have ever been irritated by the smarmy tone of a reporter asking a condescending question to someone, you MUST watch this video a the link!

If you hate hearing politicians practice political correctness as they parse every single word that exits their mouth, you MUST watch this video a the link!

We are in a time where many of us never hear a politician speak plainly.  To hear straightforward unparsed opinion from a public figure is as quaint and extinct as a buggy-whip factory.  When someone should have been speaking up as we piled on massive debt and increased taxes instead of cutting spending and reducing taxes, many of us wondered why all of them have either gone along with it or opposed it in silence.  THIS video of a press conference with Governor Christie was as uplifting and refreshing as it was shocking in its frankness, when we are so unaccustomed to hearing it.

I implore you to watch this video!  It is only about two and a half minutes long, an exchange between the Governor and a reporter.  I wanted to stand up and cheer.  Hey...this is entertaining AND a tonic as well.  But just because it is entertaining does not mean the underlying message the Governor delivered is diluted at all.

“Your union said that is the greatest assault on public education in the history of the state,” Christie said. “That’s why the union has no credibility, stupid statements like that.”

Heard at the last NJ teachers union meeting when the subject of the new NJ Governor was brought up.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you your President.

We have to protect our phoney baloney jobs here, gentlemen! We must do something about this immediately! Immediately! Immediately! Harrumph! Harrumph! Harrumph!

When a teacher boasts of a master’s degree—ask “in what subject?” If they tell you “education” feel free to scoff. That is so different from “Math” “Biology” or even “French.” There is no dumber bunch of slackers than PhDs in education.

He is freaking awesome. He is a bright guy as he was US attorney but he is also like a bar room brawler.

He is not going to back down.

When I was in college the saying was, if you flunk out of your major go into education. If you flunk out of education take journalism.

When you flunk out of law school go to divinity school. When you flunk out of divinity school ride your father's coattails into the U.S. Senate and then have a fellow commie ask you to be VP. Then call yourself the smartest person on the world.

Her masters degree certainly wasn’t in business or math. If she wants $3/hr for each of the 30 students and admits it would total $83,000 annually then she would only be expected to book 922 hrs on the clock. That’s only about half what a typical full-time, 40 hr/week worker books with holidays and vacation taken into account. Myself and most of the managers and top staffers I work with are salaried exempt (no overtime) and are booking 3x her hrs.

“So she wants 3.00 for each kid?”

And she supposedly has 30 kids in her class. So she is complaining that $90/hr is not enough compensation. She is delusional. Then the math only works out to $83,000/yr which means she is only working 5.5 hours per day for a standard 175 day school year. Sounds like a pretty cushy gig compared to working in the real world.

From the comments at Hot Air -

Okay, now try teaching 25 kids at once with a textbook from 1956 and a couple Apple IIe computers as “learning aids.”:

Conservatives demonize teachers, then wonder why most teachers are liberal. Shocking!

Good Solid B-Plus on May 25, 2010 at 11:13 PM

Ummmm, I would say that in the year 1956 our kids were getting a much, MUCH better education AND they did it with 1956 textbooks and NO APPLE IIe COMPUTERS!!!

"...stupid statements like that.”...and the one in the pathetic ad the union is running all over the state, pleading for Christie to "...stop hurting teachers, the people New Jersey families count on most" - actually New Jersey families are best off when they can count on themselves the most, and the less tax money they send to Trenton, the better they'll be able to do that....

Christie has the teachers in an absolute hissy fit, especially since his latest move in vetoing the "Millionaires Tax" passed by the 'rat legislature over the weekend, saying it would only drive high-earning taxpayers out of the state and make finances worse - he's fantastic.....

I imagine her Master’s is in Education. While I really like Christie, I do feel sorry for those people who have spent tens of thousands on their degrees....Unfortunately, a degree isn’t what it used to be.

Not for nothing... But borough teacher Rita Wilson, a Kearny resident, argued that if she were paid $3 an hour for the 30 children in her class, she’d be earning $83,000, and she makes nothing near that.

Page 8 of 29 of the Regular Meeting Minutes of July 13, 2009
FACULTY SALARIES 24.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE RUTHERFORD BOARD OF EDUCATION to approve the following faculty salaries and locations effective 9/1/09 through 6/30/10:

...

Rita O'Neill-Wilson HS 16 4 86,389

So, just in case you were wondering, Ms. Rita Wilson actually makes more than her example that she posited - over $3000 more (not counting her $625 stipend for some random extra duty). Thank God she's not teaching math.

Hat tip to a poster (WoosterOh) over at Hot Air for the heads up

To be clear, teachers work 180 days per year while others work an average of 250 (5 days per week X 50 weeks with 2 weeks vacation).
