I’ve never read any statistics about how many New Jerseans have moved out of state either, I’m not even sure how it could be calculated. But, I do know of quite a few, especially retired folks. And I hear about it all the time on the radio.
I’m pretty certain when I retire in a few years, I won’t be a Jersey resident.
Are you taking into account ALL of the taxes we pay?
Since most of the migration out of the state is to Florida, it’s obvious that a lot of people here don’t want to retire in NJ either. But there are a number of reasons that people retire to Florida - escaping Winter one of the primary reasons, certainly.
Nah I heard that “top taxes” line on 101.5 myself, which is one of the reasons I looked it up. When I tried to tell Casey and Rossi about what I found in during a live call, they made fun of me (like they make fun of everyone who disagrees with them) and hung up.
Well, that was when I realized that they aren’t in the business of education their listeners, just amusing them. In other words, take everything you hear on the radio with a grain of salt. A lot of it is inaccurate and uttered just to get a rise out of listeners.
They wouldn’t get people angry enough to listen to them if they said, “NJ! 10th highest state taxes in the nation!”
Yes.
When you read the statistics in that article, it’s pretty plain:
NJ residents pay the highest overall burden (local, state and federal).
If you take out the federal amount and only count state and local, we pay the 10th highest amount.
In other words, our total tax burden is highest because we have a lot of rich people who pay high federal income taxes. Those people will pay high federal income taxes no matter where they move, if they can find a job that pays as much as they do in NJ. We pay more overall because we are more wealthy (if you’re simply counting income).
Oops, my extremely bad. The third line in my answer above should read “THIRD highest overall burden.” Not “highest”.
Ok, I’ll buy that, there are a lot of wealthy people here, unfortunatley I’m not one of them, so retiring here is not much of an option. Probably rent out my house and move to New Hampshire. Florida is just too hot and flat for me, and way too many critters.
I don’t listen to 101.5 anymore, haven’t in a long time.
The 3 times I called them with corrections to what they had just told hundreds of thousands of people, I was on hold so long, my cell battery was going dead.
Absolutely. Let's pat him on the back and kick him in the butt to keep moving forward.
