Residents on a housing estate dug a trench and took to the streets to stop travellers bringing their caravans into a nearby field.
A dozen police cars were called to the estate in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, where scores of residents had taken to a street to stop travellers entering the field.
At one point they'd grabbed their spades and dug a trench across the access road to stop access.
One woman claimed a traveller vehicle tried to ram her car after she used it to block off the entrance.
Mandy Greenshields, who lives in the street, took direct action after watching three caravans enter the South Derbyshire District Council-owned land.
She said: 'I tried to block them off by parking my car in front of the entrance, but one of them in another vehicle made as if to ram me. Then the police turned up.
'Everybody was in uproar and it looked as though there was going to be a fight at one point because the travellers were urging the residents on. If the police hadn't got here, things would have got out of hand.'
Two further caravans managed to get onto the field via a different entrance, before the travellers left - to cheers from residents - after more than two hours of negotiations with officers.
Resident Karen Collier said: 'Police had blocked the road off and there were queues of people trying to get in to get home. It was absolutely manic. There were police cars everywhere.

It’s like a deadhead festival without the band.
My understanding is that Labour has been codling these travelers for years. They now seem to be able to camp and ruin land wherever they want. Even in green set aside areas that are supposed to be parks and nature preserves that if the average Brit camped in, drove over and desecrated would be in jail for years. It’s crazy
I am not sure I completely understand the situation. What is the difference between a gipsie and a traveller? Are these bums looking for a place to camp for a while? Are they sightseers? The article looses something in the translation and I need an education.
Are any of these travellers Wilburys?
******** My understanding is that once a Gypsy band encamps there they can stay as long as they want and send their children to schools (and get preferences there) and doctors and go to the head of the line for Obama-care appointments. They stay two weeks or two years. They leave when the spirit moves them
Apparently, Britain does not discourage ‘squatters’ of ‘vacant’ property. Once they install themselves, the affected owners play hell in getting them removed. It is a constant game of keeping them from entering.
I have no knowledge of this situation, but I have heard of Gypsies being refered to as “Travelers”.
“police negotiations”.
What’s to negotiate?
Property rights used to mean something.
Europe’s tolerance of “squatting” does not make sense.
‘Gypsy’ is an actual ethnic group (I believe originally from India), with its own language (Romany). ‘Travellers’ live basically AS gypsies, tribally with no settled home, but they’re not part of that ethnic group.
Ever hear of the Rainbow People? They're a bunch of FM type maggot infested hippies who travel around in big droves and camp and trash places.
About ten years ago I read where a bunch of them came down with a strain of dysntery that doctors hadn't seen in any numbers since the civil war.
Dengue Fever is being spread in Florida now.
Thanks, that explains a lot and is consistent with what was stated about “gipsies” in the article.
Thanks. It sounds like travelers are anybody that “squats” on land and gipsies are just one “flavor” of travelers.
Maybe “Hot Fuzz” wasn’t so far off, after all.
“and next thing you know there will be MIMES!”
These travelers are mostly of irish background. Try googleing ‘Irish Travelers’ to see what they are all about. There are Irish Travelers here in America too.
Thanks. That is the cool thing about this site. I learn something new everyday thanks to people like you!
I read wikipedia. Sounds like these are "off the grid folks" that authorities know very little about.
