South Korea deploys troops in border zone to ‘punish’ North

South Korea deploys troops in border zone to ‘punish’ North Friday, May 28, 2010

By Iftikhar Gilani

PANMUNJEOM: An eerie tension is building up on the border between South and North Koreas as the South is amassing troops to take punitive action against the communist North.

The tension is also threatening future of Kaeseong, a joint industrial zone, which has often been touted as a model for Pakistan and India to build cooperative relationship along the Line of Control (LoC).

The tension runs high after a North Korean submarine torpedoed a 1,200-tonne South Korean ship, killing over 50 sailors.

It is almost a replica of Operation Parakaram that India launched immediately after December 13, 2001 attacks on the Indian parliament; South Korean military divisions are marching with tanks, artillery and an assortment of American weaponry towards borders alongside Seoul announcing retaliatory measures against its Northern peer. At the Itaewon US military base near Seoul, marines and commandos seem gearing up for an assault.

Railway stations and bus stations in South Korea are full with young soldiers in their battle dresses, kissing their girlfriends and bidding adieu to their families. Leaves have been cancelled and rumours are thick in Seoul that government is even drafting young men into the army in an emergency.

Are our Destoyers and Missile boats in position yet?
Anti-sub ships and B-52’s on standby?

I guess the Chinese are watching to see if Obama blinks and has the will to follow through with his tuff talk.

The Chicomms have already taken the measure of the man and found him wanting.

Priorities, priorities! Obama probably has some meeting with Sting or Bono to attend to. Then there's the supply of Wagyu beef, the Wednesday night parties, the vacations, the gourmet pizza chefs flown in on Air Force One...

MK didn’t just sink SK naval corvette for fun or really no reason.

The brainiacs in NK obviously have some type of diabolical plan cooked up.
SK are making sure they are not falling into their trap.

Great answer. Might I add that we have troops in Korea in the
now forlorn hope of keeping China and Russia on the sidelines
in the event of just this sort of situation.

“Ooooh..! Punishing them with that TROOP DEPLOYMENT...!

Veerrrrrry tough, gosh, where is my KEVLAR...?!!!??!

I can’t believe people are falling for this.”

You are kidding, right? You think S. Korea mobilizing forces to the DMZ is going to lessen tensions and ease the crisis? Falling for what - things haven’t been this tense on the Korean peninsula in a long long time. It wasn’t even this bad after the nuke tests a couple years back.

I had a friend from college who served two years in Korea at the DMZ in the early 1980’s. He told me that his time there consisted of hours of sheer boredom mixed in with some moments of absolute terror. According to him, there were firefights with the North that were never reported in the press.

Here’s an idea: We pull our troops out and use the saved money to cut some of the deficit. They defend themselves. Any of our advanced weapons they need they can buy from us for cold, hard cash.

Does the West, NATO, the Allies, the UN whatever pump democratic propaganda into North Korea,
Air drop transistor radio's, Pirate radio, leaflets, food onto their brainwashed population?

Or would that be construed as an act of war from SK?

I wonder which side our administration will back.

Whichever side China tells him to back. Clueless, gutless, capitulating pigs like 0 are very dangerous. They tend to continually cave and then snap and over react.

Out of sight, but, not out of mind are the nuclear subs under the sea to keep them wondering if they are pointed at them....

IOW, he already blinked.

Blinked?! Hell he's hiding his face behind his hands like a teenage girl at a horror movie.

You nailed it. It disgusts me that the obamanation has probably given orders that will prevent our troops from aggressively defending even themselves.

The real players right now are North Korea, South Korea, China, and Japan.

If/when we see Japan move to a war footing, then it’s on.

China is the wildcard. They don’t want a war, but they can’t be seen as weak against South Korea and Japan. (If the US had real leadership, they could take cover under the threat of effective US action, but we don’t so they can’t.)

China’s only out is a covert pre-emptive decapitation of the Nork leadership, which they will then blams on someone else. But only diplomatically.

Kim Jong Ill knows this, hence the deployment of Nork troops and missiles on the border with China.

This is going to get bad.
