RICHMOND - The University of Virginia filed a court challenge today seeking to block Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s investigation of climate scientist Michael Mann.

The university filed a petition in Albemarle County Circuit Court as the first step in a legal process to set aside Cuccinelli’s civil subpoena seeking documents relating to global-warming research by Mann, who left U.Va. in 2005 and now works at Pennsylvania State University.

President John T. Casteen III said the university intends to protect academic freedom. The issuance of Civil Investigative Demands, or CIDs, “has sent a chill through the commonwealth’s colleges and universities—a chill that has reached across the country and attracted the attention of all of higher education,“ he said.

Cuccinelli, at a Wall of Honor observance at the Capitol, said he would have no comment until tomorrow. The attorney general, a skeptic of global warming, is suing the federal Environmental Protection Agency over what he has characterized as flawed research.

Mann received five grants from the state during his tenure at U.Va. Cuccinelli is seeking Mann’s work under Virginia’s Fraud Against Taxpayers Act.

I support the AG and anybody else seeking the records of these so-called “scientists” who likely falsified data, colluded to ignore data and pushed the globull warming hoax...all on the public payroll. They should be beaten with their dissertations and jailed.

They believe taxpayers should not be able to find out what they are spending their money on. They call this academic freedom. At the same time they impose speech codes to stifle freedom of expression.

Ken Cuccinelli is awesome. The U of VA is a joke in trying to coverup and obvious fraud. Taxpayers were defrauded. Let Al Gore fund his fantasy and scam.

These records should be made public. They obviously have something to hide.

Casteen is worried about a "chill" when Cap and Tax will help to bankrupt the country??!!

I thought he was a ninny talking during Yeardley Love's rememberance ceremony. Turns out I was wrong.

He's a fascist.

WHAT?? Demand to know the TRUTH?? Why, how UN-AMERICAN!!!! (Which of course would be GOOD, as far as university leftists are concerned.) But we certainly can’t demand the truth from a leftist professor!!! After all, it’s his right and DUTY to lie. How else would those government GRANTS keep rolling in?
