UN talks back conference on nuclear-free Middle East

Nearly 200 nations, signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), have agreed to work towards a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Middle East.

The members, meeting at the UN in New York, called for a conference in 2012 attended by Middle Eastern states - including Iran - to establish the zone.

The unanimously agreed document also said that Israel should sign the NPT.

US President Barack Obama backed the deal but said he was "strongly opposed" to Israel being singled out.

The US says the reference could jeopardise efforts to persuade the Israelis to attend the 2012 talks.

An Israel official later denounced the document as "hypocrisy".

"Only Israel is mentioned, while the text is silent about other countries like India, Pakistan and North Korea, which have nuclear arms, or even more seriously, Iran, which is seeking to obtain them," a senior government official told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.

Obama and the UN. Obama's phony anger is transparent. He still supported the deal.

Didn’t Jack Bauer already scuttle this peace deal?

Treaties among corrupt megalomaniacs and mad mullahs can hardly ensure peace.

obama’s muslin brothers can not destroy Israel until they get rid of those nasty nukes. then it will be a bloodbath as Israel can not defeat all the muslin nations with out nukes and U.S. support( which they do not have now under obama ). The U.N. by supporting these”talks” shows that it is supporting terrorists.

The UN is a mouthpiece for Islam. Look at the composition of the UN, better yet... simple example is look at moamarr Ghadaffi whi has all of Africa behind him....whats that? 83 countries?Add in the mideast.....

and they want to gang up on the only democracy there!

The real story is that the US caved. The Arabs have trying to get this passed for over 15 years. The US signed on and then issued some phony story that the Administration is angry that Israel was singled out and Iran was not even mentioned.

Someone needs to redirect the UN’s activities into promoting democracy in the mideast, and NOT supporting the mullocracies.

Is the U.N. really stupid enough to think the other nations will honor the treaty? (Don’t answer that). This is just another attempt to blame Israel for not disarming and giving up the only advantage that prevents their annihilation.

The UN is not a real entity. The nearly 200 plus nations that support this conference, including the US, is the reality.

In my opinion the U.N. should be declared a terrorist and removed from our country.
