Australians fear war with China, says Lowy Institute survey

ALMOST half of Australians believe that China will become a military threat to Australia within 20 years, prompting record support for the US alliance.

According to the 2010 Lowy Institute foreign policy poll, 46 per cent of people think China will be a threat, with 19 per cent of them rating the possibility as "very likely".

And 55 per cent of the 1001 people surveyed named China as the world's top economic power, compared with 32 per cent for the United States.

The reality is that China is Australia's number one trading partner, but its economy rates number four, behind the EU, US and Japan.

While 73 per cent of people regard China's growth as good for Australia, 57 per cent said the Government had allowed too much investment from China, and 69 per cent said China's aim was to dominate Asia.

Of those surveyed, 55 per cent wanted Australia to join with other countries to limit China's influence.

While Australians saw America's economic power as waning, they were still strongly supportive (86 per cent) of the Anzus Treaty and a military alliance with Uncle Sam. That was up from 63 per cent just three years ago.

I doubt Australia is the first on the Chinese conquest list.

Indeed. China’s neighbours would likely be among the first.

China faces two nuclear powers directly, and several more, indirectly.

Now that brought a smile to my face. I have always admired the Aussies. Great folks.

My guess would be :

First-Taiwan

Second-Korea

Third-Japan

Fourth-IndoChina

Fifth-Indonesia/Malaysia

Sixth-Australia/NZ.

India is who they fear most.

Red China will have to be destroyed, sooner or later.

I put south east asia(vietnam, cambodia, etc) as second after taiwan. And probably indonesia after that.

There’s nothing for them in japan and korea. They need cheap labor and brides for their male surplus population.

Temper your admiration by asking what's changed in the past 3 years. Has the US Administration become more reliable or more Pro-Australia?

Or do Australian lefties now wish to stand next to the Magic Negro?

Agreed.Japan,South Korea,India and the US (not necessarily in that order),I think, have the most to fear. And I'm not completely convinced that "conquest" would be their aim..I think the *threat* of aggression, rather subtly communicated, might be enough to allow them to achieve their goals.

First-Taiwan

Ooops...you're right.Forgot about Taiwan. If I was a resident/citizen of Taiwan I'd be shaking in my boots these days...and I think the shaking would get worse with each passing day.

Aussies (and others) may have cause for concern but,IMO,the Taiwanese have good reason to be soiling their underwear right now.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.Does the typical Aussie think that Hussein isn't as pro Australia as previous US Presidents? Given that he's shown open contempt for the UK and other old allies it may well be reasonable for Aussies to believe that. And I'm sure that lefties throughout the Western world adore Hussein so that shouldn't surprise anyone.
