Parked all around Naval Base San Diego are impressive vessels that patrol waters all over the globe and in recent years we have been lucky enough to get a front row seat for Aegis Missile Tests, Aircraft Carrier Homeports and the war on terror in the Persian Gulf. Ships like the 'USS Ronald Reagan', 'USS Lake Erie' and the 'USS Milius' have given us an amazing insight into the workings of the world's most powerful Navy and the hard-working sailors and marines who keep us in charge on the seas.

As the sun tries to peak through the "June gloom" across the bay and into the largest base in the western U.S., we see the Navy's stealth newest craft, the 'USS Freedom'. This Littoral Combat ship is one of two designs being considered by the Navy, with the task of getting closer to shore and faster as they fight the "War on Terror" and the "War on Drugs". Already this ship has rundown go fast boats off of Mexico, capturing the bad guys and seizing a massive amount of illegal drugs headed for U.S. shores. Can you imagine the look on the drug runners faces when a 300-foot Navy ship doing more than 50 miles an hour catches you?

"the capability to launch and recover boats (manned and unmanned) from water level on the stern and the side"

That'd make a great pirate mother ship.

Given the state of the current debate, some of them are likely mothers.

Pretty, but it’s a Ford GT40 when the job needs a Jeep.

no air defense capability, so it needs to operate as part of a carrier battle group. Put CWis onboard along with a quad Stingers and build 50 immediately!

Wiki has it having:

Armament:

    * 1x BAE Systems Mk 110 57 mm gun, 400 rounds in turret and two ready service magazines with 240 rounds each.[8]
    * 2x .50-cal machine guns
    * 21x RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile Surface-to-Air Missiles
    * 45 NLOS missiles (As part of ASuW mission module)
I'd like to see more places along the sides where you could mount .50 cals as needed, or better yet have 25mm chain guns on either side:

If it has no air defense, why is it equipped with:

* 21x RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile Surface-to-Air Missiles

I guess she has more s-A capabilities than I was led to believe. Still clone 50 right now. Put ship killing cruise missles on them too!
